THE Football Association will not announce Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor as England manager until next week.
English football's governing body have finished interviewing contenders for the job but no decision has yet been made.
An announcement will not be made before next week as the FA's nominations panel have yet to decide on their favoured choice to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Once the panel have done so, they then need to have the decision ratified by the FA board, agree terms with the new manager and, if necessary, sort out compensation with a club. Such a process is likely to take several days.
Martin O'Neill and Steve McClaren continue to look by far the strongest of the candidates but it is understood that Alan Curbishley and Sam Allardyce also impressed when they were interviewed.
A senior FA source said: "All the people on the shortlist have now been interviewed and it is now a case for the nominations panel to determine the candidate they want - and they have not done so yet.
"All the candidates interviewed very, very well and as a result it means the panel have a lot to consider."
Under the process laid out by FA chief executive Brian Barwick, the nominations panel - made up of Barwick, FA chairman Geoff Thompson, international committee chairman Noel White, Premier League chairman Dave Richards, Arsenal vice-chairman and FA board member David Dein and FA director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking - have to have their choice ratified by the board.
The next board meeting is on May 4 but an announcement should be made before that - once the nominations panel have come up with a name the board may be informed via a conference call.
Who would you like to see appointed? Have your say.

It was obvious whoever was going to be chosen is English but what is uncomfortable is there is no one with any credentials of success. It??TMs the only job in the world you can be rewarded for being mediocre.
i cant see why they dont appoint the new manger before the world cup as we all know new mangers have a honeymoon period so why not let our new manger have it in the world cup and just think how much confidence it would give the new manger to have a world cup under his belt stright away. and sven is very bias in his team selection towards united.
Keep your hands off MARGINSON.
boff, italy - wheras mediocre players are ALWAYS rewarded. Mediocrity anywhere else is rewarded with the sack. Only in football is failure rewarded so highly.
I think the FA have to be congratulated on the way they have quietly and subtly gone about the process of appointing Englands next manager. Most other organisations would have rushed into a decision by making a foolish move but clearly the experience and professionalism of the FA Board has been invaluable in taking their time to appoint the best candidate for the job. Well done boys with you leading football into the future the continuing success of football is assured.
Hands off Karl Marginson!
