NICK Weaver says he has turned down the chance of first-team football to put pressure on David James as City's No 1.
Long-serving Weaver, one of the last links with the Blues' rise through the divisions, had offers to move elsewhere next season as a free agent, but felt he owed it to himself to try to regain his place in the City side.
Still only 27 years old, the former England under-21 keeper will be entering his tenth season with the Blues, for whom he has appeared 176 times at first-team level.
And he admits he has seldom been more excited or focused about the season ahead.
"People who think I have taken an easy option to sit on the bench for a year are severely mistaken," he said, referring to the contract that will be signed in the next week or so.
"All professional footballers want to play and so do I - for Manchester City. I suppose I could have gone somewhere else and played first-team football, but I genuinely feel I am in good enough shape for the first time to put real pressure on Jamo for the starting role."
Weaver has not begun a City first-team game for more than two years, but has proved his full recovery from the revolutionary knee transplant operation in America that saved his career.
Physical
A successful spell out on loan at his home-city club Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship not only proved his physical well-being but also convinced him that the knee would stand the week-in-week-out rigours of the professional game.
"This will be my tenth year at City and I will be coming back next pre-season hoping to put a real challenge to David James," he declared. "Since he has been at this club this is the longest run I have had being fully fit.
"I still believe I am young enough to have a future here and, as far as I am concerned, I am signing to battle Jamo. I could have gone to other clubs but I want to give it one more year - and if things don't work out, then I will look at it again.
"I have been fit for a long time and I feel great and want a real crack at it. Everyone needs competition and we need three or four keepers at this club all pushing one another to better things.
"Kasper Schmeichel is doing very well. I have been to watch him a couple of times on loan at Bury and he has played well and it has done him good. He will come back and push me and I will push Jamo and that is what it is all about.
"I suppose I am a link with the past and I have been here a long time, but I don't want people thinking I have signed a new deal just out of sentiment. I am sure the club wouldn't have offered me a contract if they didn't think I could do a job and I certainly wouldn't have agreed to it if that were the case.
Training
"I am not part of the furniture. I really believe I can get back into the side and achieve things here. That is what I want to do.
"The loan at Sheffield did me the world of good. I played 14 games, all over the Christmas and New Year period, and didn't miss any matches or any training sessions.
"It gave me great confidence, because the longer you go without playing a number of first-team games, the doubts do creep in. They creep in for other people too and maybe I proved in that spell with Wednesday that I could still do it. Moving there is one of the best things that I have done because it got me back on track."
Weaver admitted he is a different animal now to the one that burst upon the scene so dramatically as a teenager.
"My favourite tipple now is Lucozade," he laughed. "I work hard because I realise I am lucky to be where I am after what I have been through.
"I was so close to never playing again that, no matter what happens now in the rest of my career, I am determined not just to make the most of it, but enjoy it as well. Being able to train every day and not get the aches that I used to is fantastic. That bodes well for the future."
Meanwhile, Schmeichel has agreed another month's loan at Bury after impressing in the Gigg Lane side's battle to stay out of the bottom pair in League Two.
Does Weaver have a future at City? Have your say.

still my favourite player in the citysquard. understand if he would leave next summer if he doesnt get the 1. spot. but would no matter what be a sad day. with james, weaver and schmeichel we are strong enough in this position.
personally i hope weavs claims the 1.spot next season
I would love to see him regain his side in the team. Why not give him a chance now.
get DJ out and NW in !!!
Weaver is bobbins, I would rather have Moonchester in the goals.
Here's an answer to those cynics (Barton included) who think loyalty is a thing of the past in the modern game. Would like to see him get some first team action before the end of the season.
Good luck Nick. It would be great to have you back between the sticks lad!!!
Good luck Nicky, i hope it works out for you lad.
What chance Dickov and Weaver recreating Wembley magic this time next year?!
Nick Weaver was showing superb form before his latest injury. He was coming for crosses, his kicking was good and his shot stopping was excellent.
He is several years younger than David James and less prone to blunders, why not give him a chance till the end of the season?
Moonchester's far too big headed for me
With the James doing his jeckyl and hyde act again maybe Weaver will get a game before the end of the season. (will James be here next season? Isn't his contract up this year? and I've not read anything about him resigning)Much as I like him I'm still not sure Weaver is good enough for the top level.
A great attitude for the game,
competition gets the best out of everybody.
Seen weaver in the reserves a few times this season, he"s as good as " sid ".
Weaves was one of the most promising players when he was a youngster, starring in the City 1st team as a teenager, he has great character as proved by the way he has battled back from terrible injury problems. He deserves his chance to prove what he can do with no fitness problems. I hope he displaces Jamo & becomes no1
Wasn't really good enough before his injury and has gone backwards since. We can do better than Nick in nets.
He seems to have settled down from his "Beast of Cheadle" days. I remember City v Ipswich (under Royle) when City won 1-0 at home - he was awesome. We should have been beaten 5-1 by rights that night. Lets see more of the same!
From the reports that I have been hearing via a Bury fan Kasper is the future.
Weavers not good enough.... Simple as. Reasonable Championship player at best.. Not sentiment in football, move him on, and lets gets some proper competition in for DJ...
Weaver is a complete loser and was the main reason for our relegation. He is my most disliked city player and that is really saying something at the moment!!
how many more chances does this guy need !!! he's takin the mickey now !!
he's gotta be kiddin, right?
Yet another charity case that we decide to help. Never in a million years is Weaver good enough for a Premiership start. Pearce realises that he doesnt have any cash to buy a replacement so we give yet another un-deserving player another free trip on the gravy train ( a la Reyna / Sibierski etc ). He was an embarrassment at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season. Little talent and no ambition so he decides to quite fancies another year in the stiffs. I hope he's on vastly reduced wages !
Give Weaver a go between the sticks at least for half a game. Bring him on from the bench and let Jamo see the competition he will have for his place. Let him play (1/2 game) against good sides, like Arsenal (won't make that much difference to the score) and at least that way SP and fans will know if he's really up to the job.
I sat behind Weaver in the Platt Lane during the season in the Prem under Royle that we were relegated. He used to shut his eyes when he came for a punch in a crowded penalty area. Let him go. He's not good enough.
If Nicky "the barrel" weaver ever places for you shower again i will laugh my little socks off. He is the biggest waste of space i have ever had the misfortune to met. Over paid and over weight...............love SP
