FC United 2 Winsford 1

FC UNITED had double cause for celebration as they started 2006 with yet another victory.

The red rebels' 2-1 home win over second-placed Winsford stretches their lead in the Moore and Co Solicitors League Second Division to a massive 14 points and leaves them looking odds-on favourites for a debut season title.

And the bumper 4,328 Gigg Lane crowd set a new attendance record for the fledgling club.

But it took the shock of falling behind to a 52nd-minute Rob Hopley goal to bring Karl Marginson's side to life.

Hopley stunned the hosts by firing into an empty net after keeper Barrie George had been left stranded.

FC United's response was to subject the visitors to a sustained onslaught, which led to Simon Carden bundling in an equaliser 11 minutes later.

And Winsford's time-wasting tactics were punished 10 minutes from the end when Rory Patterson blasted in the winner after being released by Orr.

I know Ive said this before, but it always feels good to come from behind then get the win. For me this was the tie of the season - so far. As regards performance, to quote Sir Matt, I think player for player we were the better side. But I also think their unit play was admirable. Winsfords game plan is built on defence and from 0-1 down our players did well to pull back the win. I wouldnt be surprised if both FC United and Winsford become the two teams that gain promotion come the 29th April. They came third last season so good luck to them. Having read the match day programme, I understand Winsford have endured financial difficulties of late which resulted in them selling off star players and with that relegation down the divisions. Previously in the Unibond first division, I am sure they were one of the first clubs to see a bumper payday from FC United fans as a welcome supplementary cash injection en-route back to that place. I hope to see Winsford again in Step 5. of the NWCFL Div.1. Other same day results from NWCFL Div.2. (The Great sports who applauded the MRE after conceding TEN goals) Castleton Gabs 1-1 Ashton Town (who had the most endearing eighty plus stalwarts selling match day badges at our away game). (The now fabled, but not yet seen) Chadderton 0-3 Cheadle Town (who put on a great performance at our George Best tribute day). (The team we beat 6-0 at home) Daisey Hill 3-2 Holker (who rolled out the red carpet for our away game in Barrow). (The club with no shame) Darwen 1-4 Padiham (also promotion hopefuls). (The Div.2 club that spoke most highly of FC Uniteds away support) Eccleshall 1-2 Leek CSOB (who are particular about their acronym and have Scooby Doooo... in goal). (The team we beat at home during the Trafalgar bicentennial week appropriately named) Nelson 1-2 Great Harwood Town (who like Chadderton we have yet to play). (The team who like to throw officials in the drink) New Mills 0-5 Flixton (one of the teams we love to hate). (The only team to beat us in the league b" thus far) Norton Utd 2-1 Oldham Town (who call us the fancy Dans). Blackpool Mechanics (another club we all love to hate b" so the song goes) didnt get a game. Next up Darwen at home on Saturday 7/1/06. Viva la revolution, come on FC.

Free Red you are a poet mate. Cracking game against Winsford and the league record smashed again. The "Bring on United" chant that went on for 15 mins was fantastic, Joz and Chaddy in the Main Stand and Rory's scorcher was the icing on the cake. Great day can't wait until Saturday. It just gets better and better and better...........

Over 4000 this week. Another great attendance figure to shame the knockers. And there will be even bigger gates next year in a higher league and with more disgusted of Old Traffords refusing to pay inflation-busting Glazer-fuelled price rises. After all, it is the mug fans who will have to pay back their loans, hedge fund interest rates and transatlantic flights.. Forza FCUoM

Thanks Eric, Happy New Year. And speaking of attendance, the Non-league governing body provides a table for the top 20 average attendances. To 23 December 2005 the table as follows: 1st Exeter b" 4077. 2nd FC United of Manchester b" 2733. 3rd Hereford b" 2643. 4th Cambridge Utd b" 2639. 5th AFC Wimbledon b" 2593. 6th York b" 2550.7th Aldershot b" 2402.8th Stevenage b" 2149.9th Working b" 2046.10th Kidderminster b" 1890.11th Morecambe b" 1729.12th Crawley b" 1679.13th Halifax b" 1608.14th Grays b" 1478.15th Burton b" 1478.16th AFC Telford b" 1444.17th Scarborough b" 1441.18th Accorington b" 1396.19th Weymouth b" 1348.20th Dagenham b" 1310. As I said in a previous post, FC United are the second best supported Non-league football club in the Country. We also hold the records for highest attendance in both home and away games in the NWCFL (and thats both divisions). Bring on Darwen. Lets give em a game at proper northern prices.
