Wigan: Jason at the double

WIGAN Athletic's two-goal Carling Cup hero Jason Roberts does not want to talk about the possibility reaching Cardiff - he's not looking beyond the Boxing Day clash with Manchester City.

Roberts warmed up for an on-field battle with his idol Andy Cole by powering Latics to a 2-0 victory against Bolton last night.

And Roberts said: "Progressing is a nice feeling and this club just keeps writing more new chapters in its history.

"There were some good individual performances and we deserved to win. Andreas Johansson did superbly for my first goal.

"Every player was superb and in particular Lee McCulloch, who was up front with me.

"Mike Pollitt made an unbelievable save as we stood up to Bolton.

"I now can't wait for City's visit. Andy Cole is a hero of mine and it's always been a pleasure to play against him.

"I marvelled at him when he played for Newcastle and have followed his career ever since."

Wigan assistant boss Chris Hutchings reckons the new JJB Stadium pitch is helping Latics.

He said: "We're back on track after five tough games. Bolton came here full of confidence after trouncing Everton but we played superbly, showed plenty of character and took our chances well.

"The Carling Cup now goes on the back burner until the New Year. We now have to prepare for City's visit on Boxing Day but we're all in good spirits and the manager Paul Jewell will be just fine for that.

"Bolton can make life difficult for any side but we saw two great finishes from Jason Roberts to win it.

"He was strong, quick and he showed a cool head. And our centre-backs were superb.

"We can now put this one to bed, enjoy the win and look forward to seeing the manager back ranting and raving later in the week."
