Goals in the last half-hour by leading scorers Simon Carden and Adie Orr saw Marginson's men to their 13th victory in 17 starts in front of a crowd of 2,303 on a heavily-rutted pitch at rugby league club Barrow Raiders' ground.
It leaves FC United with one hand firmly on the championship silverware as they approach the half-way point in their league programme.
But Marginson, whose high-flying side have played three games more than the four teams with the best chance of catching them, said: "There's still a long way to go so we must keep our eye on the ball."
FC United had to wait until the 64th minute before Carden broke the deadlock with an unstoppable left-footed drive for his 15th goal of the season.
Orr then doubled their lead three minutes later with an inch-perfect lobbed volley. Tweet

Barrow was a great run out. It's been a while since I've been up there and the scenery was as beautiful as ever. The only down side to Barrow was the cold wind coming in from the sea. I think the low wind and rough pitch combined to give for a disjointed game from start to finish. The Refereeing was poor, and the back-pass rule doesn't seem to have been adopted by some. If Howard and Carden hadn't combined to score the first, the game may well have finished a draw. Adie Orr's goal was unstoppable. There's no way their keeper, Liddicott, was ever going to reach up to that. He should have stayed on his line. Holker squandered a couple of chances, but after that never really looked like scoring. I think 2-0 was a fair result. Karl is right to warn against complacency. But I think that if we beat Winsford at home on 2 January and the players remain focused, then the league title will be as good as in the bag. Other league results from the NWCFL Div.2. Cheadle Town 4-1 Leek CSOB, Darwen 5-0 New Mills. NWCFL Div.2 Cup second round. Ashton Town 2-1 Oldham Town, Nelson 2-1 Eccleshall. The last result means we will be playing at home v. Eccleshall in the third round of the Division 2 trophy on 11 February. Viva la revolution. Come on FC.
Since it is Xmas, why not barrow the Hatchet with true Reds and head back to OT? Free Red, I got lost with your directions to the match and didn't get a chance to see the big victory. Thanks.
Does Dash/Tommy really think he is fooling anyone? You would have to be as disconnected as he is if you can't follow the directions for THREE roads with infrastructure descriptions. I think he should give it up! He obviously doesn't realise that he is only making a fool of himself. Maybe he thinks FC fans don't talk to each other. How clueless is that? Tommy is a standing joke on other FC forums and that is a fact. You've got to laugh. He would be funny if he wasn't so sad. It's fortunate FC fans are peaceable people prepared to talk about almost anything other than paying off Glazers debt. Perhaps Tommy should try the United fans MEC web-site if it still exists. For those fans there's nothing left to talk about. I think the United fans there would be happy to tell 'Dash' where he could 'barrow' his hatchet.
Best away game all season and I'll be at the Flixton game on Boxing Day. Dash Walny YOU ARE A FAKE. We are the true Reds. You are nothing but a TV watcher and its obvious.
Ah! You're laughing now, but just wait till the Glazers start giving SAF money for the transfer window. No, it's true! They've promised! They've got a 25M pound kitty and they've said they'll use it.
Missed the Barrow game. I have seen the pics on the FCUM web site. Great result. Its heartening to see so many dads with their kids enjoying the day. I will be there at Flixton (with the kids) if i can get in!!
Mammal talc poof, Bury Old Road - So that's all right then. All that just leaves is the small matter of a B#0.5 Billion debt the fans are expected to pay off. Smashin'.
Red Rivs, Sale - You don't live far from Flixton so you could do a lot worse than pop over for tickets this week. I went over a few weeks ago and the club were selling from 3.00pm onwards. If the worst comes to the worst, you can always use the back door behind the heath side goal.
Free Red. I have to agree with Dash on the directions. I know you only mentioned three roads but the instructions were so verbose and flowery I couldn't follow them. perhaps you could try being more economical with the words. A little like you are with the truth. Your report on the game by the way reminded me of Wordsworth. No sorry Jobsworth his well known mentor. Did you know there are barrows near Stonehenge but no sign of FCUM having played there?
Free Red. Your economics and business sense has still to reach primary level. Don't you think other businesses pass their costs onto customers too? Or are you boycotting their products too?
Free Red. Did you see the hatchet on the FC United fans site. I think that might be the one you are referring to? What with those jolly songs and the jog around Old Trafford you FC boys certainly have shown how "FC fans are peaceable" or did you mean risible?
I hope the Ed might indulge me in passing on a message of faith to all football fans this Yuletide. In this festive period it might be worth spending a few moments reflecting on the meaning of this season of goodwill to all men. Of course we all want our football team to be the best but we can do that without animosity to others. When the good Lord gave us his own son to be born in order to redeem us on earth he did so without first checking team allegiances. So let us all join together as one this Christmas and enjoy the game but most of all thank the Lord for his sacrifice. Football fans can sacrifice pride too and love all other football fans.
Any news on the new ground or will it be another groundshare?
what a christmas this is going to be.With 2 great games v flixton away boxing day then winsford at gigg lane on 2nd of jan, fantastic top of the table clashes.Win loose or draw they promise to be great days out, this is what football dreams are made of.Ohmalc ,where`s your next $ coming from?
FLIXTON v. FC UNITED GAME 26/12/05 k.o. 3.00pm: TICKET INFORMATION AND DIRECTIONS TO THE GROUND: This match is all ticket and I am not sure if tickets will be sold on the gate. The bloke I phoned at Flixton FC wasn't sure either. Tickets are available in advance for B#6 from Flixton FC, Valley Road, Flixton, Manchester. Tel: 0161 748 2903. No concessionaire prices have been made available for this game. DIRECTIONS: There are a few ways of doing getting there by road, but this will get you from the roundabout at Jct. 9 of the M60 (unless you're Tommy 'Dash' or any of his other alias names, in which case stick to gridiron or something just as sad - Doh.). If you approach jct. 9 clockwise around the M60 you will first see a block of council flats on your right called Circle Court. Take the slip road down to the roundabout staying in left-hand lane. You then turn left onto Lostock Road. If you approach jct. 9 anti-clockwise around the M60 you will pass the Trafford Centre then see the same block of council flats coming up on your left. The tower block is made of dark coloured bricks and the only one in the area so you can't miss it. As you leave the motorway, do so in the second lane from the right, then turn right onto the roundabout under the motorway and filter over to your left-hand lane. Take the first left, Lostock road, as you emerge on the other side. Drive down Lostock Road (B5158) until you pass a Total petrol station on your right and reach a second roundabout. Take the second turning from the roundabout, Hayswater Road, and drive to the end of this road passing Davyhulme library going through a third roundabout called Hayswater Circle on the way, but sticking to Hayswater Road until you reach the junction with Moorside Road. Turn right onto Moorside Road and drive for about half a mile until you reach a fourth roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout taking the third turn off, Woodbridge Road, and drive approx. 150 yards. Valley road runs across at the end. Other results to look out for. NWCFL Div.2: Cheadle Town v New Mills, Great Harwood Town v Darwen, Holker v Blackpool Mech, Leek CSOB v Norton United, Oldham Town v Chadderton, Padiham v Nelson, Winsford v Eccleshall. Have a merry Christmas and enjoy the game. Viva la Revolution. Come on FC.
Brad amown, and your business sense does not even reach primary school level. Yes businesses pass on costs to consumers - and fans have no problem paying for wages, ground costs, transfer fees, and similar, what we object to is paying huge interest bills that had nothing to do with operating costs or even development costs of the business of Manchester United. That is why we have migrated to FC. Our club, our rules.
Rev Bruce Allen, Ainsworth - Well said, only Malc/Tommy IS NOT A FAN so to hell with him. I do not have time for any of this devil dodging God bothering anyway. Christmas is dead. It was destroyed by over commercialisation and the same thing has happened to Manchester United. That is why we became infested with parasites and clueless non-fans such as Malc/Tommy. This is what you get for being too friendly and trusting of others. We won't make the same mistake twice. FCUM
P.S. Just a tough of Xmas trivia. According to the official Non-league average crowd tables, FC United has the second highest average attendance in the Non-league pyramid with 2,733 fans per game. Top is Exeter City with an average of 4,077 fans per game. Hereford are third with 2,643, Cambridge United are fourth with 2,639 whilst our friends at AFC Wimbledon have an average gate of 2,593. The other fans Club AFC Telford average 2,733. - And finaly, I thought 'Dash' or one of the 'other new posters' who appeared from nowhere on the Gabs story, would have been the first to spot my error in the results. You know, with them benign 'former player' fans and all that - Yeah right!
Jack, Beswick, if you can get excited about playing a pub team like Flixton, not once, but twice in the next few days, more power to you.
JJ. You really don't have any experience of business let alone economics do you. I bet you are one of those who can't do so......... Interest is an operational cost. Customers don't get to chose how costs are made up they get to differentiate on price, brand and quality. United clearly come out on top with all three. FCUM do not pass on one criterion other than some misguided loyalty. How much of FCUM's aspirational costs are being passed on to their "customers"? Get back to the gym JJ.
Free Red. Why don't you post under your real name?
To hell Christmas. As contradictory as all the other FCUM "fanatics" here. Your arguments hold as much water as a colander.
The reason Free Red doesnt post under his real name is because through opposing Glazers hostile take-over in every lawful way conceivable, he has attracted more Spam than the processed Meat Company ever produced. He also has to safeguard the welfare of his family against the possible unlawful actions of narrow-minded bigots. P.S. I know how much Tommy/Dash Walny (Andy Walsh anagram) and lots of other post names likes to know the attendance figures, so I thought I would give him an easy mistake to spot. AFC Telford has an average attendance of 1444. We will of course be playing NAME (see my first post) in round three of the NWCFL Division Two cup. As I clearly stated, they won their round two tie so work it out. I wonder why Malcolm Tampa uses a pseudonym? Viva la Revolution.
Here we go again with Malcolm (the I-only-post-under-one-name Malcolm) in one of his many guises, spouting forth about things of which he knows little. Johnnie john is absolutely right. To apply a classic business model to a concept such as football allegiance is totally misguided. For example, if a particular automobile manufacturer started to produce a defective car, word would spread and that product would be shunned. Compare that with, say, the football attendances of Manchester United in the seventies and eighties. What was on offer in Malcolm's "quality" terms was very poor indeed, but the fans stuck with the team and in all but four of the last 40 seasons they have posted the highest gates in the country. Even when, in 1974-75, they went down to the second division, as it was then, they achieved the League's highest attendance figures. Remember, this was in the days of pay at the gate, when it would have been very easy to just stay away and not feel that you were wasting your season ticket. In what other field of human endeavour, other than the sporting arena, does this contradictory effect obtain? As for his comments about passing on aspirational costs, what kind of claptrap is that? Malcolm is like his real Floridian coreligionist, a person who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
