Parkin made several changes to his usual line-up for Tuesday night's LDV Vans game at Tranmere.
And although Dale went out 3-2, Parkin saw enough to be confident that he has the resources for the Christmas programme.
He said: "It was important for me to see what type of shape we have in our squad with a busy period coming up.
"I have to say that those who played were fantastic and the lads who came to watch their team-mates will know they are under pressure to perform."
Paul Tait pressed his case with two goals on his first start of the season as a replacement for the injured Grant Holt.
Holt, who was suffering from a stiff neck, is expected to be fit for Dale's second home league game on the bounce
"It was nice to see Paul grab a couple of goals. He played really well and deserved his success," said Parkin.
Gareth Griffiths has served his three-match suspension for a hotly-disputed red card against Lincoln and will be back in defence.
Tommy Jaszczun picked up a slight groin strain in last Saturday's 2-2 draw against Chester but Parklin expects him to be in contention for a place against Shrewsbury. Tweet
