FC United 6 New Mills 1

FC UNITED hit New Mills for six last night to march nine points clear in the Moore and Co Solicitors League second division.

But it wasn't quite the cakewalk the 6-1 scoreline suggests as the red rebels had to recover from the shock of falling behind inside a minute.

The evening started with players and supporters joining in a novel tribute to recently-deceased director Russell Delaney - a minute's applause rather than the customary minute's silence.

But it was the New Mills fans in another bumper Gigg Lane crowd of 2,297 who were soon cheering loudest when Ryan Radford sprang the FC United offside trap to fire the visitors ahead.

Steve Torpey crashed a free-kick against a post and it fell to centre-half David Chadwick to level the scores on 27 minutes when he rose to head home Torpey's corner.

After that, the floodgates opened. Simon Carden bagged a hat-trick inside 18 minutes either side of the break before Adie Orr added a fifth - his 13th goal of the season.

But FC United arguably left their best goal until last, substitute Rory Patterson swivelling to shoot home 12 minutes from time to round off a satisfying night's work.

Good game with class showing through. New Mills did n't give up and all credit to them. The mark of respect to Russ Delaney was fantastic well done to all. It was the first time I had seen this at an English game. Team played well with Torpey and Carden being the icing on the cake. Joz needs a goal to boost his confidence though he played well. Noise from MRE was incredible. 2292 b" It looked more and certainly sounded more. Nine points clear and it's better to have those in the bag than having the games outstanding. Is Ryan Gilligan on the injury list? Roll on Saturday if Mrs Eric the Red lets me have a pass out.

Have to agree with ERIC THE RED, it was a great game and very entertaining. I had a tear in my eye for Russell, didnt know the guy personally but remember his early work against Murdoch.
It felt more than 6-1 but maybe that s because me and me daughter were bouncing up and down, twirling our scarves singing RED ARMY....!
The songs are getting better , some funnier.
Pies were cold which was a big disappointment.
Torpey man of the match, Orr second.
Wonderful night.
Life is red.

Another great night. Shame the slight nippiness kept a few people away. Slightly worried about that "you'll wish you'd never scored" chant...

One day that song is gonna bite us in the as$!

It's starting to come together up front with Torpey & Howard wide (when available) and Orr/Patterson/Mitten to choose from up front. Could do with half a yard of pace at the back, but who needs defence when you score 6 every week!!

But lets not be complacent at Edgeley just cos we stuffed em 5-1 a few weeks ago.

p.s. please ignore those two tossers.

I hope the minutes applause gave comfort to the family of Russell Delaney. Looking down from above I bet he was well impressed. The minutes applause lasted 90! It always feels good when you come from behind to go on and win. Our unit play was better than at Darwen. Our defence was good and once we took the lead, and extended that to three, the win looked comfortable. Next up another league game v. Cheadle Town this Saturday. Lets hope we can maintain the league points gap. Viva la FCUM

The Russel Delaney tribute made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I remember the Busby tribute at Old Trafford with the piper and that was fitting for that occasion given the stature of the great man and the Russel Delaney applause showed what this Club and its supporters thought of him. Let's not forget he was a pioneer of this Club and even through his illness was still involved. The piece in the programme was very good. Great man - I salute him. Anyway I think the squad is coming together and Margie had made some astute signings what they lack in pace at the back they make up in their maturity on the ball (apart from first thirty seconds last night!) but we are strong across midfield and the future looks red with the likes of young Aherne and Spencer and Gilligan and Carden..............can't wait to see Howard bombing down the flanks at Gigg Lane b" awesome. For a little lad Adie Orr is one of the fiercest tacklers I have seen. He covers a lot of ground and is fierce and his timing is good. Did anybody hear the "I know a man called Ryan Gilligan" chant at Darwen? Nice touch for Bestie as well.
