WIGAN Athletic have negotiated a new deal with Pascal Chimbonda to fight off interest from rival Premiership clubs when the transfer window reopens in January.
Defender Chimbonda has proved the bargain buy of the summer after his £500,000 move from Bastia.
He had a "get out" clause in his three-year deal allowing him to leave Wigan after a year if potential buyers bid a certain fee - believed to be £2 million.
Latics' officials have met Chimbonda's agent Willie McKay and a compromise has been made to remove the clause and to improve terms of his existing deal.
Challenge
Manager Paul Jewell said: "It's obvious from the way Pascal has started the season that he is up to the challenge of Premiership football, so it's only right to look at revising his contract."
Goalkeeper John Filan, says Chimbonda has proved a superb acquisition. He said: "I'd never heard of Pascal before he came here and he's been a revelation."
Meanwhile, it's been confirmed Wigan will lose their star striker Henri Camara in the New Year, when he plays for Senegal in the African Nations Cup.
How important is Chimbonda to Wigan? Have your say.

Chimbonda is a good player for Wigan. They`re flying high at the moment, but I expect the run up to Christmas with a couple of losses and they`ll go crashing down into relegation as quickly as they came up-DEFINETLY. Sorry Jewel your club`s honeymoon period will end when Wigan play M.U.F.C
Pascal Chimbonda is for real!!! He's been a good acquisition for Wigan so far, and hopefully with this new littlle clause in his contract, he'll be able to really feel at home with this team and even have a bigger impact defensively and keep on putting some offensive pressure on other clubs. Both he and the club deserve this!
