Bury 2 Notts County 3

An entertaining 90 minutes at Gigg Lane that had everything but a Bury victory.

Former Stockport striker Glynn Hurst scored a hat-trick inside 20 minutes on his return to Greater Manchester.

But from 3-0 down the Shakers did their best to extend their unbeaten league run to six matches.

Tom Kennedy netted a penalty given for handball after 57 minutes and Simon Whaley scored his fourth of the season with nine minutes left.

That wasn’t the end of the drama before Notts held out for their first win in 10 league outings.

Neil Edwards, who conceded a penalty at Chester last Saturday to deny Chris Casper’s team three points, brought down hitman Hurst. Referee Darren Drysdale had no alternative but to send off Edwards who now misses Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Scunthorpe.

Yellow card

It wasn’t the best of afternoons for the little Welshman who had already been yellow carded in the opening 45 minutes.

Edwards protested in vain he’d been blocked by Michael Edwards to prevent him reaching the corner from which Hurst headed in after 35 minutes.

It became 2-0 just before half-time when Hurst finished off with a left foot drive following a defensive error.

And the ideal hat-trick was rounded off with a right foot tap in after more poor defending from another corner.

Even after Edwards’ late red card and a fine save by stand-in goalie Dave Challinor, referee Drysdale booked Whaley and County’s Kelvin Wilson after the final whistle.

That took the yellow card haul to eight.

What did you make of Bury's performance? Have your say.

It's been brought to my attention that some cretin has been posting derogatory comments about Bury FC on the MEN Bury FC web-site using my post name. This is only the third time I have posted on the MEN Bury site and the post below isn't by me. I would like FC Uniteds temporary ground share at Gigg lane to be amicable. FC United get somewhere to play and Bury FC gets extra cash equal to a good cup run. Plans are in the feasibility stage for FC United to procure our own football ground in Central Manchester. In the mean time, I would like to say Bury FC have been excellent hosts and I would like to wish Bury FC, the fans, the players and all concerned, all the best for the season and for years to come.
