FC United 1 Oldham Town 0

FC UNITED broke the attendance records for both divisions of the North West Counties League when 3,110 fans saw them beat Oldham Town 1-0 at Gigg Lane last night.

Simon Carden scored the 55th minute winner to settle a thrilling match and extend United's lead at the top of the second division to six points.

He struck with a right-foot volley which flew across the keeper to end a sweeping three-man attack involving Steve Torpey and Roy Patterson.

United, whose previous best attendance had been 2,498, had it far from their own way.

They had the lion's share of the possession but seventh-placed Oldham kept them on their toes with quick attacks on the break.

United's League Challenge Cup first round tie at Cheadle Town a week on Saturday will be all ticket with a capacity of 2,000.

The game has been given the go-shead following consultation with the police.

Can FC United keep increasing the size of their crowds? Have your say.

Salford market must be doing a roaring trade in inflatables. Its interesting to see that 70's fashions have made a come back too. As for the clown who ludicrously defended FCUM's over charging by "the Board" because they have to pay Bury for ground sharing there is no way their "business plan" would have forecast these massaged attendances. Still plenty of money in the kitty for the Vicars Tea Party. Glug, glug, glug. Nice to see FCUM encouraging local football. Tunbridge Wells, Doncaster and Baa radford all well represented not to forget Stockport. Shouldn't the word Manchester be removed to avoid misselling?

I really do think that the attendances will get bigger and bigger. Once anyone has had the FC experience they will want more of it.

FC United will never get off the ground..... it's just a pipedream... oh.. it's just a bunch of 200 drunken hooligans... 'home of the terminally childish' blah blah blah... well done to everyone at FC United for getting the club going. As the song goes 'We've only just begun....'

the more fans get disillusioned with OT the more FC's crowds will grow. Everyone who attends FC for the first time is enjoying the buzz and are returning for more.
This could snowball........

Ive been to all the home games with my 6 year old son and he loves it . The football is great and the atmosphere in the 'Left Side' of the Manchester Rd end is getting better each game. As long as the standard of football remains as it is or better the crowds will keep coming and getting bigger.

F.C United support will grow, simply because it's a community and it's a football club with soul and more importantly spirit. D. Orr

Now I understand what this is all about. First FC United game last night and I have to say I was completely blown away. I can not described the atmosphere. I have never experienced anything like this. FC is the one for me. As much as I love Manchester United, FC has made me really that I can still support Manchester United without supporting the Glazer's and have a tremendous amount of fun at the same time.

I was sceptical about FC United, but not anymore.

how disgraceful that these people should form their own football club and then go on to enjoy themselves. there should be a law against this type of hedonism. outrageous

Wonderful night. Poignant moment was the "keep the red flag flying high" song.
Great result but boys looked slightly tired. Thats where we come in. Lets lift them on saturday. Saturday is a big day as a lot more united fans will be coming. My forecast is 5000.
To all the fans at the Oldham match it was a privilege to stand with you.

Joe Hill and John Robb b" fantastic posts. The audacity and shamefaced insolence of these FC supporters eh? Just who do they think they are? It'll never work. It will all be forgotten about in 6 months................. It just about sums it all up. Expecting a larger crowd on Saturday. Torpeys out with a hamstring problem so if he goes on the MRE let him sit down. Under the boardwalk watching FCeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Quality night. Like you all say, you can still love Man Utd without giving your money to those who don't. Couple of pints and a ticket to watch FCeeeeeeeeeee you might spend B#15, but you definately get value for money. KEEP THE RED FLAG FLYIN HIGH. Oh and get more staff on in the Swan & Cementry.

Why is tat when the crowd sing "get your t*ts out for the lads" all the FCUM players lift their shirts up? Bellies going to get you.

Scanning the pictures of the game I have three comments: 1) Nice Cuban flag in the stands, way to support your brethren! As a Floridian with Cuban interests, I find that beyond disgusting and beyond ignorant. B) I counted the number of people in the stands and I only counted 2,442. Apparantly some of the ladies there for free night were counted twice by the FCUB officials. 3) I think the owners of FCUB and Man Yoo might reach a draw in a beauty contest.

Congrats Bury Boys! Good job FCUB!

Cuban cigars all round guys for such a great new club! We must organise a cuba flag day at a home match soon. Forza FCUoM, viva Cuba, viva Castro

After a fantastic United,United day, a South American revolutionary flag flying day sounds good to me Johnniejohn. I can here the crowd now! " Castro - Castro - Castro", although I don't recall who Fidel played for. Who's this 'Victoria siempre'. Is she the barmaid at the 'Blue & Slapper Inn'? Viva la FCUM.

I believe the majority of fans do not claim to be redder than red, or 'real reds' (whatever that means), just folk who simply seek a little light entertainment at weekends. They probably do not follow United home and away and only go to home games. It is highly unlikely they post or even read on-line web-sites. When the financial pressure of going to Old Trafford becomes to great, they will stop going as has happened at other clubs. It is not a case of being fickle but more a case of getting their priorities in order. For most people family comes first. So where do these fans go when the cost of going to Old Trafford becomes cost prohibitive? If enough fans had bought shares in United then none of this would have ever developed in the first place. The sad fact is they did not and consequently those who at least tried devised FC United. Like any football club it is open to anyone. People know when they have enjoyed themselves and will instinctively come back. The new club does present itself as an affordable alternative and will become more attractive to fans as prices continue to increase.
