MANCHESTER United's return to the Lancashire Senior Cup after an absence of 10 years was short-lived as they lost 2-1 at Oldham Athletic in the first round last night.
The two keepers, Latics' Terry Smith and United's Luke Steele, performed heroics to keep the game goalless until the 70th minute, when Matty Wolfenden put the home side in front after Chris Hall had won the ball.
Kenny Cooper got the final touch to Darron Gibson's low drive to put United level five minutes later.
But the Latics had the final word five minutes from time when Kelvin Lomax netted from the penalty spot after Cooper had handled the ball in his own area.

Thats the double gone. The season is alll but over.
Lost to Sunderland Res last week now Oldham. Then what do you expect with 20 players either sold or on loan? No strength in depth. Chelsea 2nd Team is good enough for Premiership, our 2nd Team not good enough to play other teams 2nd Teams!
Sadly !!... First team is not much to shout about either, the season is already virtually over and done with, the champions leading and untouchable, well certainly as far as M.United are concerned.
Changes must be made as the manager is continuing to show signs of delusion even worse than previous years, United are no longer a force to be reckoned with and the Glazers can't be blamed for this.
Malcombe,
Get your facts straight, they lost to Sunderland and Oldham who both fielded teams with many 1st team players involved. United fielded a young team in both these games. Yes they have loaned many players out this season, they will probably loan more out in January. Sometimes one learns more from loseing than winning. These young guys are growing each game they play. Dont get me wrong it is all about winning, and thats the bottom line at UNT. We have been spoiled over the years, and we have always set our expectations high at every level of the club. What great confidence the coaching staff has by loaning so many players out this year, and still believing they can get the job done.
Josh, Hyde - Remember last year when MU ' Reserves' played Arsenal Reserves in the Cup? Arsenal had 11 players on the field no-one, not even some Arsenal fans had heard of, whereas MU had 10 Internationals & Eagles. If you want me to get my facts right I suggest you do the same. That was not a reserve team game but the games v Slumberland & Owdham were. & we lost them both.
