United and City lose out to Hull

MANCHESTER'S football clubs have been left behind by Hull in a fan poll on stadium facilities.

But despite being beaten by the Yorkshire team's football ground in terms of the quality of services on offer, United and City came top of the table as the most popular venues to visit in the country.

Football fans all over agreed that United's Old Trafford was the most loved, with the Blues' City of Manchester Stadium the second favourite.

Champions Chelsea were left languishing in the list of best venues.

Although many fans voted with their hearts in picking their favourite ground, they gave a different response when asked to decide which stadium had the best facilities.

Hull's KC stadium was deemed to be the best across a range of criteria - including seat comfort, quality of food and ease of access.

Despite being hailed by fans, Old Trafford was voted only the 13th best for facilities, and the iconic stadium did not even make the top 10 in the league for best toilets.

More than 3,000 fans of all ages supporting 149 clubs responded to the survey, but some of the results were adjusted to account for natural bias.

Geoff Aucock, a partner at Drivers Jonas property consultants, which carried out the study, said that football supporters were more discerning about the quality of grounds than they were often given credit for.

"The design of stadia in the eyes of the fans is not a simple matter of paying the most for the best stadium," he said.

"Stadia built as international sports venues and iconic design statements, such as The City of Manchester Stadium, can cost more than £3,000 a seat to build.

"But a club stadium with good facilities, such as Sunderland's Stadium of Light, can be built for under £1,000 per seat and still be worthy of hosting England internationals and be loved by its fans."

The study also found that 62 per cent of fans would prefer club funds to be spent on a stadium with a fantastic atmosphere, while only a third would rather see the money spent on players.

United have been adding an additional 8,000 seats to its stadium, creating capacity for more than 76,000 fans.

Which are your favourite and least favourite grounds? Have your say.

The KC is also a rugby league stadium and home to Challenge Cup holders Hull FC, hence it has to be a great venue for the League code.

Villa Park is a hole. Madejski stadium is a nice one though

By far the most uncomfortable stadium I know is Old Trafford. The seats are too close so you have to share more than a little elbow space with the people either side. The seat in front is to close so you get scraped shins when the person sat there leans back. Like wise, if you lean back you will bump the shins of the person behind you. My favourite is the Olympic Stadium Munich.

The swamp is a soul less meccano affair. The best ground has to be COMs but the Millenium Stadium is pretty good too.

i am a manchester city season ticket holder. the city of manchester stadium is a fantastic venue to watch football. when you look at from the outside it looks very inpresive when you take your seat fantastic view. But im afraid to say that is where the plaudits end. food and drink facilatiys are the worst i have ever experianced no staff behinde the counter. i have yet to taste colder food in all my life. so board members at city take note and on the next game come away from your warm boxes and comfy seats and sit with your wage payers for a game then maybe you can see how truly disgracfull this state of the art facillatys really are. p.s. dont start to gloat utd fans take a look at your own shambolic facilitys first

Obviously based on visits from lower division teams, hence the new stadium will seem good but the best in the country? Please! Maybe for people with short legs...
Unbelievable how much is being made of this in Hull after some of the other (more representative..) stories coming out about this lovely (*) city.

(*)my employers might see this.

I too shared more than elbow room with my neighbour. I'm 6'4" so whoever sat in front of me tended to have about 2' of armrest.

Someone once told me that if the world had piles then Hull is where you'd find them. Says a lot for OT & The Council House doesn't it?
