Winsford United 2 FC United 2

FC UNITED'S 100 per cent start in the Moore and Co Solicitors League second division was ended by a plucky Winsford at Northwich last night.

A bumper crowd of 2,220 at the Victoria Stadium saw the red rebels forced to settle for a 2-2 draw in a contest which only really came to life in the second-half.

The visitors, who had struggled to break down Winsford's resolute defence in the opening period, were stunned to find themselves a goal behind seven minutes after the restart when home skipper Mark Quinn slid in to score at the far post.

FC United stepped up the pressure and were rewarded with a 73rd minute equaliser, Steve Torpey blasting them level.

Karl Marginson's men then stormed in front just three minutes later with a close-range strike by Adie Orr, following good work by ex-Radcliffe and Accrington star Simon Carden.

But the lead proved to be short-lived.

Winsford's Stuart Wellshead capitalised on a misunderstanding in the FC United defence which left him with a clear run on goal and he calmly held his nerve to fire past advancing keeper Phil Priestley.

Can FC United achieve promotion at the first time of asking? Have your say.

Yes, FCUM can get promotion, but it will be no easy ride as other teams in the division target FCUM as their biggest rivals and the team is still coming together. With crowd support at a level which is the envy of some Conference clubs, FCUM have the base to go all the way this year. FORZA FCUM!

FC United are most definitely one of the front runners for promotion this year. But to assume FC United will walk into league one would be disrespectful to other clubs. Winsford United FC are a good step 6 outfit and they are at least as keen to be promoted as we are. It was obvious by the amount of determination they put into the game last night. I think player for player we are a better side. Where Winsford had an edge was in having more experience of playing together as a team. Our team's spirit is good, but the players need more experience of playing together. That should show by the return game. I think 2-2 was a fair result. I still think we had a strong call for a pen in the last few minutes.

Pie in the sky ambitions I'm sorry but FC Utd are light years away from Glazers club, mark my words it will fizzle out!

Go FCUM. I've been following the FC United united news since the first day and I'm already an unconditional fan. GO FCUM!!! This draw was just a reminder that the other teams won't just give up. Keep true to your principles and the promotion will happen naturaly.

In the land of the blind the one- eyed man is king. Minor league football at its best. With each passing Man U victory I see attendance figures going down down down at FCUM. . . .

Does Stuart Brennan double as attendance taker?

Tommy, Tampa - You found us at last I see. Oh dear! We know your not a football fan, but it would also seem that your enumerate as well. FC United games average 2000. We had 2220 at the Victoria Stadium for a night game. That would be, as you would put it, up up up at FCUM...Urm, No. Having Stuart Brennan there wouldn't double the attendance, that would be 2221 - Doh! By the way, how's you neighbour Ned Flanders. Still bashing the good book. Perhaps you could persuade him to join your back yard united team down the park. You could have yourself a nerds derby.

Tammy in Tampa, at least FC base their attendance figures on punters through the turnstiles. Presumably the Glazers count red empty seats when calculating theirs, as I've seen plenty of those at Old Trafford this season.

Ted - I suspect your blind faith in the Glazers will "fizzle out" long before FC United does. Still if either of you fancy seeing a noisy, passionate crowd of football fans, you know where we are.

Jeez i am having to rethink my whole marketing strategy. Who leaked this information to the Press. I thought we agreed to only announce wins. Ok lets see. We have an unbeaten record. Ok only unbeaten games are to be repotrted on. Of course FC United can win promotion. Took a look at those guys on the web site and gee are they ugly not to say fully proportioned if you get my meaning. Not bad for a local park team though. Can we get Simon Cowell in to do some auditions? How about renaming Gigg Lane, Black Pudding Field?

Great attendance that. 2,200 for an away game...
I think FCUM will go up, but I'm glad there are teams to challenge too. Winsford were young and up for it. The game was excellent. I go to MUFC too and will happily discuss FCUM with some of you clowns on here at any MUFC game, home or away, this season.

Big Daddy Malcolm, I could not agree with you more. I have also perused the photos of the FC boys. My only question is: How downtrodden, ugly, out of shape, beer bellied and pale must look the players on the teams they have beaten? The Bucs preseason is over Big Daddy, let's get up to the Twin Cities and rock some Purple!

Well, it took us 2 1/2 hours to get there fighting through the Sheffield and then Manchester rush hour traffic but it was worth it. Winsford was the best team we've played but as always, none stop singing for 90 mins and all the crac, banter and witt I'd expect from the crowd. The draw was a gentle reminder that every game is the other teams cup final. Loving the ride.

FC United are massive and anyone who doubts that is either a bitter or happy clappy jester hat wearing MUFC pro Glazer fan. So there. Glad to see that real debate is still alive and kicking. I was wondering who FC United consider to be their derby rivals. Could it be Radcliffe Borough (probably too big league for FC Locomotive yet). Those glory hunting Boro fans hey. Or Prescott Cables ( nah too far away). Or Maine Road (no big time charlies). Could it be Diesel Ainsworth ? or Newton Heath choo choos?

DonnyRed, you were singing for 90mins? so you were never a real Rag fan in the first place, you was among a group of glory hunters without a thread of loyalty - which club are you all going to support next week when some car dealer buys your club for half a pack of fags and a meat pie?

Hey Tommy I guess we done touched a raw nerve out there. I am wondering why the league isn't sponsored why WeightWatchers. Notice the way these guys just love to win. Real Americans if you ask me. I just can't wait for the football season to begin. Go Buccs.

Tommy Tampa - The bump you got on the head in 'nam' and the local produce, must have left you a bit confused. When I suggested you try becoming a fan, I meant 'the beautiful game'! The Buc's play that gridiron thing where players dress up in puffed up padded shirts & tights. I have absolutely no interest in gridiron, but from what I can gather, points are awarded for shouting out random numbers whilst trying to imitate a troop of primates. You say your going up to the Twin Cities to rock some Purple! NO Tommy, The Purple team are the Manchester Giants! I think you'll find they play basketball! Still, you can take some credit for venturing away from watching television sports. Now try again, only this time, don't mix up your sports.
