It wasn't the result boss Ronnie Moore had planned against the club that sacked him last season.
But Rotherham who were relegated after Moore's departure gave his new side a testing time.
They finished the first half the stronger side and Latics keeper Chris Day had to make some vital saves.
He kept out a Michael Keane shot in the 37th minute then made a fine one-handed save to deny John Mullin two minutes later.
It was Day again back in the thick of the action on the stroke of half time when he tipped a dipping 30-yard volley by Keane from under the bar.
Day came up with another stop in the 77th minute when he used his legs to keep out a close range shot from the busy Mullin.
But the keeper, who was the hero of Saturday's 0-0 draw at Colchester, had not chance with Burton's well struck match winner even thought there were loud claims for a hand ball as the player burst into the box.

Ah well the obvious biased team selection methods used by Mr Moore over the last two weeks are proving that he is probably just as bad as the last Manager, players of proven quality left on the bench or out altogether to include all Mr Moore's favourites...or so it appears.
Last 3 games NO goals scored and after the 0-0 draw against Colchester who got thrashed by
Southend today tells the story as it really is.
Too many defenders/midfielders and still no obvious efforts to find cover for Beckett or Killen....and who got left out again today ????? yes the only fit striker on the club books...biased ??? you bet !
Same old story, same old book just a new cover sadly.
What's the story with Killen? Does the boss not like him. Heard him say bad things about him in the press about being injury prone. He does score goals when he's fit. Are the fans and the gaffer sick of waiting for him to get off the treatment table. sorry cant make a first hand judgement-im in Canada.
