FC United 7 Eccleshall 1

FC UNITED fans were in seventh heaven last night as the rebel reds maintained their 100 per cent record at the top of the Moore and Co Solicitors League second division with a 7-1 rout of Eccleshall at a noisy Gigg Lane, writes Tony Glennon.

And club bosses were equally delighted with the attendance of 1,978, which given the circumstances, emphasised the FC United phenomenon is set to be far more than a brief protest against Malcolm Glazer's Old Trafford takeover.

FC United spokesman Jules Spencer said: "Considering we were up against Manchester United live on TV, it was our second home match in less than a week and there were also problems on both Metrolink and the M60 which forced us to delay the kick-off by 15 minutes, it's nothing short of magnificent that so many fans should have turned out to support us.

"It means nearly 4,500 people have watched our first two home games in the space of five days and we have to be more than pleased with that."

Mark Rawlinson gave FC United a dream start by tapping in Josh Mitten's cross after just six minutes and they made it 2-0 on the half-hour when Steve Torpey fired in a free-kick from the edge of the box.

Rob Nugent headed their third goal shortly before the break and, though they did allow Eccleshall to pull one back within moments of the restart, that only served to prompt a devastating response from Karl Marginson's side.

FC United quickly made it 6-1 with three goals in less than 10 minutes, two goals coming from substitute Adie Orr with Rawlinson's second of the night sandwiched between.

Orr's fellow substitute Ryan Gilligan added their seventh goal with time rapidly running out.

And, with FC United having now scored 15 times in just three league games, none of their legion of supporters could possibly complain they're not getting value for money!

A very enjoyable night.would it I'm not sure what to make of the result. Is the team really starting to click, were the opposition very poor and what happens if too many games are not a proper contest.

Just 3 games into the club's history and it is now more and more about FCUM, the club run by the fans for the fans, rather than a negative focus on what has been. Everything about the club seems positive and just. FCUM are a force for change in the game and that can't be bad.

To the previous contributor, the result and standard of football is important but it is probably secondary to the genuine football experience. I attended last night with my daughter who has been to OT on many occasions. She was virtually in tears she enjoyed herself so much. She got the full repertoire of songs that she has only managed to grab snippets off at OT. I must say, for a 56 year old myself, it was an age defying experience. I felt like a teenager, swaying and singing and laughing at the absurdity of some of the chants. Im definitely hooked as is my daughter and not only that, I will be bringing some of my grand children to show them what being a football fan is all about.

I find it interesting that even a year ago, United fans laughed when I told them I went to watch a lower division side.

And even though I told them we stood up, had a laugh with our mates, sang our hearts out for ninety minutes etc, they regarded it as Mickey Mouse footie compared to the 'real thing' at Old Trafford.

I think it's brilliant that you have finally discovered what football is all about in the form of FC United.

But mostly I'm pleased that the arrogant, 'nothing outside the Premiership is worth bothering with' attitude in the game is now receding.

Got there for the start this time (late arriving from OT on Saturday) The atmosphere is great - brought back memories of 30 years ago at OT (Tunnel, righside lefside, scoreboard paddock) All longtime reds must know what I mean. Football VERY entertaining not 10 morons behind the ball and boring sideways passes. Highly recommended! *****

fantastic non stop support from the fans, and what a change to see young kids being able to sit with their mates and have fun.first class performance from united made for a good night.

7 goals, a realisation that Fergie's sold out among those that can appreciate what is going on across town at OT, a fat keeper and no jester's hats. Suits me, sir. See you at Northwich Vics for the Winsford game. Under the boardwalk..

I think my Tampa Backyard United could have held them under 7 goals. Was the other team drunk?

You are right Non-prem fan and we were wrong. Watching FC in these last few weeks has been much more fun that all that time at OT. The loss of watching the fantastic skills of Rooney and Ronaldo is more than compensated for by the atmosphere of the matches and the committment of both players and fans. Long may it last.

Ps Prices are B#7 for adults, B#5 for over 60s and B#2 for children. Pay on the gate and choose where to stand or sit. A bargain!

Ive now seen 1 friendly match and all 3 league games for FCUM. Watched MUFC from late 1960s until late 1980s when it became too expensive. The atmosphere takes me back to the early 1970s - the football too is good value. A throwback to Tommy Doc's team that got promoted in 1974 or 1975? Make sure you take in a match at some stage this season. If you dont hate them (MUFC or FCUM) l'll gaurantee you'll want to go back again and again. It really is that good. You must experience it to appreciate it.

I battled rush hour traffic down the A1 and then the M62 to Junction 17. Only these days I do a right at the roundabout to Bury instead of a left to Salford and then onto OT. It's been a long, long time since I've got excited about attending a midweek match and this is only the beginning. It feels like the 80's all over again!!

Fantastic how well things are going for those who were brave enough to leave Old Trafford behind. The only club in manchester that's not in debt looks to have a very bright future indeed.

7 v. Nill? Was the other team drunk or a was it a coed team?

Excellent night. Lots of goals and a good team performance. I have watched a lot of football at this level and FC United would have absolutely no problem in Conference North. Best B#7 I have ever spent. Off on my jollies but will be back for Balckpool Mechanics. Are you watching Cheadle Town?

I went to Kingstonian's and Flixton's grounds for the friendlies and I never thought the experience of watching this team would get better. It did. Last night at Gigg Lane was truly fantastic, not just for the football, but the atmosphere which had the hairs on the nape of your neck standing up. To see people like Sean Bones and Andy Walsh, who was there selling programmes was a humbling experience. Making a 300 mile round trip to see this game might be madness to those that crave sanitised atmospheres, but getting home at 2.30am wouldn't dissuade me from doing it again.

Mmmm a debt free club...I might buy me some shares

In response to Delia's kitchen, ticket prices are B#7 for adults, B#5 for over 60's and B#2 for under 18's

Everyone is more than welcome and there are many families there, it's a real comunity club where 3 generations of football fans can stand, sing together and enjoy their football with no prima donnas, no sanitised atmosphere and above all else no jester hats!

Forza FCUoM

(red tom) Let me remind you of a very OBVIOUS FACT -
You can only get into CL or any other league of that ilk by winning (or top 3 runners-up in some cases) your country's respective leagues. Hence Buckie Thistle weren't there nor were Colwyn Bay. Your comments are an insult to every supporter of every team not in the top 4 in Eng, 1 in Wales & 2 in Scotland so I fail to see what the point is you're trying to make. GROW UP. Want a great atmosphere then go to FCU, want to sit in an expensive morgue then go to OT - the choice is yours.

(Malcolm, Tampa) - Leave us alone. Look at the mess you made of the last club you did that to! Anyway yes buy a membership (no shares available). Remember 1 man 1 vote regardless of size of purchase. Come along to a game it's only B#7 adults, B#2 children B#5 OAPs. ....... and as for the atmosphere, well, when you've been once you'll never want to go anywhere else ever again. Or you could stay where you are, too frightened to go to a game or when you do you sit in a morgue! The choice is yours.

(Tommy, Tampa) - I remember years ago going to watch a cup match at OT (in the 70's I think) where we beat Newcastle 7- 2 . Were Newcastle drunk or a coed team? No. They were high-flying fellow football team who were doing their best. They just came up against a better team on the night. ditto Eccleshall. It's like that in football. You'll get used to it. Whatever happens this season there is no way I'll be going to OT to sit in an expensive morgue or be told I can't put a banner up because it blocks advertising space. There's only 1 football club in Manchester not in debt & that's where I'll be.
