Scots don't want GB team, insist SFA

THE Scottish Football Association today insisted they would resist the creation of a Great Britain team for the 2012 London Olympics.

The governing body have supported the bid itself but was adamant that a GB team would erode Scotland's status as an independent footballing nation.

The Scots, along with Wales and Northern Ireland, have held independent status since the 19th century and are keen to protect it as much as possible.

As a result, the Scots made it clear they wanted no part in plans to create a team for the 2012 games.

These are being put forward by Football Association executive director David Davies and have already been backed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

An SFA spokesman said: "The SFA fully supported the London Olympic bid and were delighted when the result was announced and are honoured that Hampden has been selected as an event venue.

"However, the SFA has always said the same thing about the prospect of a British Olympic football team.

"In footballing terms we are a separate nation. The general consensus among fans and players in this country is that there should not be a British football team.

"The SFA have always been strongly opposed to anything that threatens the separate identities of the British football associations.

"There is a fear that the creation of a British team would invite pressure from FIFA to compete regularly under one banner. This is not what Scotland supporters want."

That last statement certainly appeared to be accurate as a poll of Tartan Army regulars - thousands of whom have followed the national team across the globe - showed little enthusiasm for a Great Britain team.

The poll on a fans' website showed almost 90 per cent of those taking part urging against SFA co-operation.

A GB football team has not taken part in an Olympic Games since 1960 when there were three games, against Brazil, Italy and Formosa.

The last time qualification was attempted was in 1971 ahead of the Munich Games the following year.

All the players selected for that were amateurs from English non-league teams and they lost 5-1 on aggregate to a Bulgaria side that doubled as the full-strength national team.

In 1974 it was decided not to attempt qualification to the Montreal Games in 1976.

Britain won the first Olympic tournament in London in 1908 and an England side took gold four years later in Stockholm, with Denmark defeated on both occasions.

Whether the GB side will be revived again as an entirely English creation remains to be seen, with the competition now open to the game's top professionals.

The Olympic competition is for Under-23 players, with a limited number of older players allowed. The current champions are Cameroon.

I may be taking total rubbish when I say this but I understand that the situation is as follows:-

If a combined British football team entered the Olympics, UEFA and FIFA would enforce a rule which requires a combined British team in all other competitions. The other side of the coin is that if we sent teams to represent each of the separate Home countries, then all the other sports in the Olympics would insist that the same principle applied which would, obviously, affect the medal tally. However, like I said at the beginning, I could have got it completely wrong. Perhaps anyone else could give further information.

You all beat me to it,but of course the GB team would be dominated by Scottish players, for insttance...erm,well theres erm, what about erm,oh I forgot erm...NONE of them would get into a GB team, thats why they oppose it,but it has to be said, you would think they would be all in favour of it,as after all,its the only time the Scots can say they have any representation in a major tournament. They must enjoy being humiliated by those huge footballing nations Faroe Islands and Luxumburg,or being thrashed by Italy and Holland et al.

the reason is that if a GB team takes part in 2012 then FIFA will try and force scotland, england and wales (dunno bout NI) to form one team for all competions not just the olympics and nobody in scotland wants this. Besides they r in 7 years time so nobody can say that the reason is no scots will be in the team because the players who will be playing r about 15 years old at the moment

To be honest i have always felt that we shouls all compete separately[as in the commonwealth games;with land of hope and glory as the english national anthem!] Or we should abandon the historical "anachronism that is BRITAIN" and become individual countries which is after all what we are. History teaches us that nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come or as impotent as one whose time has passed. Frankly i dont blame fifa for saying which is it england or ritain maybe this will act as a spur for a debate, i have always considered myself to be English;which unlike the scots and welsh is simply not recognised as a distinct nationality. Good luck to the scots although i suspect the real reason is that they are unlikely to provide any players on current ratings!!

What you have all missed is that it is not just about what happens on the field of play. If FIFA viewed the four British nations as one country then we would only get one vote in FIFA and UEFA's democratic process. This would severely restrict the ability of the Home Nations to influence decisions in their favour - given that on matters of import they tend to vote en bloc.
I have always been against a British team and just because the Olympics are on home soil doesn't make a scrap of difference.

H is spot on when he said if we had a GB football in the Olympics then we would be forced by FIFA and UEFA to field a GB team for the World Cup.......thats also the reason why the SFA and the Englaish FA will never sanction Celtic and Rangers playing in the Premiership. If that move happens then you can say could goodbye to England and Scotland as Independant football nations.
Plus I have the luxury of supporting both my mums a scot and my dads english

UEFA and FIFA have said they will sanction a GB team for the Olympics, but the players have to be amateur.
Is there really any point in sending players from minor leagues to play in a competition which is effectively an under 21, or is it under 23, world cup?
The Scots have thought long and hard about this and said no because their players are so bad Uefa and FIFA would make an exception to the rule and allow Scottish professional players into the side, only to then find not a single Scottish player makes the squad!

If the gb team materialised then the same thing would happen as it did with the lions! Players picked on reputation and not form. it would be an england team featuring ryan giggs! and dumb scotts? Proud Scotts i would say! We are about national pride not just trying everything to win an olymipic medal!!

I'm glad that the Scottish Football Association have stood their ground against what can only be described as the usual arrogance of the English.

As a small nation of 5 million team sports will always be dominated by England. The sooner Scotland and England are Independent countries again the better.

England have some really exciting players at the moment and I'm sure if given the chance England supporters would be happier cheering on England with their St Georges flags than GB.

I for 1 am a proud Englishman and the last thing that i want is to watch a GB team....i don't wanna watch the Scots or the Welsh representing my country not that i think that they have one player good enough between them to get into the side but thats not the point........what next a European team?
