JUSSI Jaaskelainen, Bolton's Finnish international, has beaten an all-star cast to be named the best goalkeeper in the Premiership this season.

His outstanding performance has played a key part in Bolton keeping their Premiership place, and he will receive the Barclaycard Golden Gloves Award before today's final game of the campaign at West Ham.

Jaaskelainen, 27, beat Shay Given of Newcastle, who finished as runner-up, Carlo Cudicini of Chelsea and Liverpool's Polish international Jerzy Dudek to the honour.

His success is all the more outstanding because Jaaskelainen missed the latter half of last season because of a cruciate ligament injury and it was touch-and-go whether he would return for the start of the season last August.

He said: "This is brilliant news for me and for Bolton. I am very pleased to be awarded this honour.

"I had a bad injury last season and to do well in the Premiership after recovering from it has been excellent.

"Our main aim was to survive in the Premiership, and winning this award is a fantastic bonus."

The inaugural accolade is awarded jointly by Sky Sports and the Premiership's official sponsors, Barclaycard.
