Former Wigan Athletic midfielder Michael O’Neill has been appointed new Northern Ireland manager.

O’Neill, who earned 33 caps for his country and played 66 times for the Latics from 1998-2000, edged out two other former internationals in Jim Magilton and ex-Oldham Athletic boss Iain Dowie for the job.

The 42-year-old resigned his post at Shamrock Rovers earlier this month after they became the first League of Ireland side to qualify for the group stages of a major European competition. Tweet
