Fabio Capello's men struggled early on in this World Cup qualifier, but skipper Ferdinand headed home from a corner to break the deadlock.
Alexandr Kuchma's own-goal put England two ahead before a mistake from Ashley Cole enabled Zhambyl Kukeyev to pull a goal back for the visitors.
However, a quick-fire double from in-form Reds striker Rooney and a late goal from substitute Jermain Defoe ensured victory and a 100% record in World Cup qualifying Group Six.
The scoreline flattered England, who were poor at times, and Capello will be alarmed how quickly the spark which so electrified their 4-1 win in Croatia last month disappeared.
Rooney and Ferdinand acknowledged England can play better and Rooney told ITV: “In the first half we had couple of chances and could have gone in one or two goals up at half-time.
"But we knew we had to be patient.
“We knew the chances would come and we would take them. We took them in the end and ended up with an easy victory.
“We know we can play better, but the result was the main thing - to get the points on the board. We’re delighted with that."
Ferdinand added: “We would like to play better than did today - especially in the first half - but we won 5-1.
“We’ve got three points on the board and we’re pleased with that.”

Conclusion? Pick a team out of the First division. At least they would bust a gut in order to make a name for themselves!

Shaun did nothing running down those "blind alleys" out of position on the left wing, did he?
He just won the corner that Ferdinand scored the first goal from....

By the way couldn't help noticing that magical Micah has dropped back behind average Wes in the pecking order. Or are the public and england coaching staff in general beginning to realise how rubbish he really is. Him and Dunny only have two throw themselves under a bus games a season and we all know who thats against, you have only got to look at the Liverpool game last week to see them two roll over and die.
The biggest job Hughes has got remains as gargantuan as any other City manager since Mercer, regardless of how much money he has 'allegedly' got to spend, and we all know what that is
You will never have what Utd have got and England fans just sum it up. Everyone we face is a bitter rival. City believe that everybody apart from Utd is a comrade, thats why they never win owt

Taking Barry off was a good move, and I must agree about SWP he is not a left sided player and kept turning back inside the same problem we had with Rooney playing there in the first half.
The second half was a better performance.
With regard ot Gerrard and Lampard we have to make a choice of one or the other, we had the same problem years ago with Clemence and Shilton both outstanding keepers but you can only have one or the other not both and that applies here make a choice either Gerrard or LAmpard because it is stifling both players and neither shows the same level as when playing for their clubs.
A total disgrace the fans booing Cole yes he made a mistake that cost the goal but to do that to him show the level of inteligence of the fans and agree both with the pundits and Rio and cappelo comdeming them.
In Belarus he must start witht he same formation as the second half team.
As for bringing on Beckham totally disagree with him getting any more caps as he is no longer good enough just to get in the odd cross he is playing in a fifth rate league for a fifth rate team and does not deserve consideration. IF England want to solve the left side they need to bring in Young from Villa and give him a chance. As for SWP he and Walcott should be the right sided players one coming of for the other which ever starts the game SWP has been playing better for city on that side where he can use his pace to get past defenders. Walcott did disappoint in this game so should have been replace by SWP.
