UNITED stars Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney were both on target as England put on a five-star second-half display to beat Kazakhstan.

Fabio Capello's men struggled early on in this World Cup qualifier, but skipper Ferdinand headed home from a corner to break the deadlock.

Alexandr Kuchma's own-goal put England two ahead before a mistake from Ashley Cole enabled Zhambyl Kukeyev to pull a goal back for the visitors.

However, a quick-fire double from in-form Reds striker Rooney and a late goal from substitute Jermain Defoe ensured victory and a 100% record in World Cup qualifying Group Six.

The scoreline flattered England, who were poor at times, and Capello will be alarmed how quickly the spark which so electrified their 4-1 win in Croatia last month disappeared.

Rooney and Ferdinand acknowledged England can play better and Rooney told ITV: “In the first half we had couple of chances and could have gone in one or two goals up at half-time.

"But we knew we had to be patient.

“We knew the chances would come and we would take them. We took them in the end and ended up with an easy victory.

“We know we can play better, but the result was the main thing - to get the points on the board. We’re delighted with that."

Ferdinand added: “We would like to play better than did today - especially in the first half - but we won 5-1.

“We’ve got three points on the board and we’re pleased with that.”
