Preston N.E 1 Rochdale 2

Rochdale progressed into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a thoroughly deserved victory over Craig Brown's First Division strugglers.

All the goals came from free kicks as Dale took the game to their higher ranked opposition.

The visitors took the lead on 38 minutes when Lee McEvilly smashed the ball home from 30 yards, but just after the break Preston substitute Ian Anderson curled the ball home with his first touch.

There is an element of doubt as to who actually got Rochdale's winner. Paul Simpson curled in a free kick that embarrassed home keeper Moilanen and youngster Simon Grand made sure when he smashed the ball home from close range.

As to whether or not it was his goal Simpson was unconcerned.

'To be honest I'm not bothered if it's mine. The important thing is it proved to be the winner. If it is Simon's then I will be pleased for him because it would be his first ever goal.'
