Wrexham 1 Rochdale 1 (Dale win 5-3 on pens)

FIVE perfect penalties saw Rochdale through to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and extended their decent run to just one defeat in their last 10 outings.

Leading scorer Chris Dagnall gave Steve Parkin's side a deserved 44th-minute lead but Wrexham hit back in the second- half when Matty Crowell hit home a deflected shot from 20 yards.

Without extra-time, the game went straight into penalties with Gary Jones, John Doolan, Alan Goodall and Keith Barker all converting and, after keeper Matthew Gilks had saved from Chris Llewellyn, Dagnall fired home the decisive fifth to see his side through into today's draw.
