ROCHDALE were denied a first win by a second half penalty in a game in which they had to withstand pressure throughout and in the end they were thankful to Matt Gilks for two terrific saves that enabled them to register their first point of the season.
After a torrid start Rochdale took the lead somewhat against the run of play when Chris Dagnall produced a smart finish to a Lee Crooks free kick for his side's first league goal of the season.
With Dale seemingly in control and heading for a first victory Accrington produced a 76th minute equaliser. With 16 minutes remaining winger Gary Roberts burst into the penalty area and was up-ended by the retreating John Doolan.
Having dusted himself down Roberts produced a calm penalty to send keeper Matt Gilks the wrong way.
In a grandstand finish with Dale on the rack Gilks produced a terrific save to keep out a Michael Welch effort out and though the rebound was bundled home by Paul Mullin he was judged to be offside.
In the dying seconds Gilks then produced a stunning save to keep out a Romauld Boco volley.
What do you think? Have your say.
