Rochdale 0 Walsall 1

ROCHDALE suffered an opening day defeat against League Two new-boys Walsall.

Martin Butler scored the matchwinner after 48 minutes, and although Dale battled well they could not break through.

Iyseden Christie could have put Dale ahead early on but he missed the chance, while John Doolan also fired over.

Just after the break Rickie Lambert came close to giving Steve Parkin's men the lead but his free-kick went narrowly wide, and then Walsall took advantage when Butler finished from close-range.

Dale responded well and put pressure on, but despite Walsall rarely threatening the visitors held on for the win.

Your writer had his head in the sand. We dominated the game and looked a class above Rochdale - which did not surprise us. Possession 60:40 in our favour, more shots, we scored the decisive goal, Rochdale never looked like pulling it back as our defence -performed admirably.

Face it, when beaten by the better side, just accept it and move on. You won't come up against a side as good as Walsall every game.
