The visitors shaded the first 35 minutes of the contest, providing the one glimpse of quality with David Ball's through ball for Nicky Adams a glorious piece of improvisation.
Unfortunately for Dale, Steve Simonsen saved Adams' attempt and the Blades made them pay with a goal late in the half.
Former City striker Ched Evans capitalised on a defensive mix up between Brian Barry-Murphy and Stephen Jordan to advance into the area and hammer past Lucas.
The Rochdale goalkeeper was involved in a sickening collision just before the interval, colliding with an opposing player in a crowded penalty area as he bravely attempted to clear Lee Williamson's free-kick.That led to an eight-minute break in play as the experienced stopper was stretchered off the field with concussion.
After the break, the hosts raised their game and made the game safe when Richard Cresswell converted Lescinel Jean-Francois' cross at the near post. Evans added his second with a fine curling free-kick from 25 yards.

True blue les from Torquay. UP THE DALE
Doomed............................
Eyre out. What was our board thinking appointing someone with no managerial experience.
Dont really understand the comments, Rochdale played well, a vast improvement on the Brentford game. The score doesnt tell the story, poor defensive errors made the difference.
I've said it once, i'll say it again, calling for the managers head not halfway through his first season is ridiculous. Especially when you consider the club lost many of its best players and backroom staff during the summer.
See you all in Torquay next season, hopefully with Beach and Jones as the bosses of the mighty DALE. Torquays ground only 4 mins from my home.
True blue Les from Torquay. UP THE DALE
