Steve Eyre wants win on Spotland debut

Steve Eyre will be looking to open his Spotland account when Rochdale entertain Chesterfield, writes Richard Partington.

Dale go into the Carling Cup first round match on the back of defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. But Eyre insists the opening day loss to one of the division’s top sides did little to dampen spirits.

“There is no less pressure or extra pressure on the players going into tonight’s home game against Chesterfield,” he said. “Each game will be treated on its merits – this one is a cup game we want to win and we’d like to think we will have more possession and be able to break into the box more with it being at Spotland.”

Eyre hopes striker Chris O’Grady will be fit enough to start after a heel injury confined him to the bench on Saturday.

“It’s day by day at the minute with Chris,” he said. “He did a fitness test before the game at Wednesday and it was touch and go.

“Hopefully, if we can just nurse along we can get a bit more out of him for the Chesterfield game.”
