If Steve Parkin's side can end a depressing sequence of results against the Shrimpers, just the single point will be enough to secure their league status for another season.
The Dale boss has already gone on record with his views on the importance of this fixture.
"When we had that strong chat with the players a few weeks ago this was the game that I circled as being the crucial one. We can't ask for more than having our future in our own hands and though Carlisle keep on getting results, I am much happier to be in our position than theirs."
Parkin will be hoping for some good news on the injury front with defenders Greg Heald and Daryl Burgess along with striker Grant Holt all struggling to be fit.
He will also be relieved if Patrick McCourt and Lee McEvilly report back from international duty with Northern Ireland Under-21's unscathed.
Having picked up back-to-back wins against mid-table sides, Dale will be looking for more of the same against Southend who after a poor start have recovered to 14th place and even had a trip to the Millennium Stadium under caretaker manager Andy Tilson.
LAST SEASON: Rochdale 0 Southend 1
KEY OPPONENT: Mark Gower - a tricky, pacy winger.
PREDICTION: Rochdale 2 Southend 1 Tweet
