Keith Hill's men have looked impressive in spells at the start of the season, but have been let down by costly mistakes.
With just one win so far, the Dale chief feels the team have paid dearly for those errors.
"I trust the players to make the right decisions, but at the moment we are making one or two wrong decisions and paying a heavy price for them," he said.
Chesterfield are among the favourites for promotion having invested heavily in the summer, including the recruitment of former Spotland star Alan Goodall.
Dale assistant manager Dave Flitcroft said: "Chesterfield represent a massive threat. Lee Richardson would have assessed last season what they were missing and obviously had good funding to go out in the market in the summer to fill the voids and inadequacies he felt they had.
"He has brought players in and they have a wonderful array of talent.
"I think that they are just waiting to click as are quite a few clubs and once he gets them working right then they will have a superb season, I am sure."
Dale will be without striker Lee Thorpe who is suspended following his dismissal at Rotherham last weekend while the in-form Will Buckley is struggling with a hamstring injury and striker Jon Shaw (groin strain) is a doubt.
Marksman Jack Lester (groin strain) is doubtful for Chesterfield and both Lloyd Kerry and Robert Page are suspended after being sent off in the 3-0 defeat at Dagenham last Saturday.
Spireites goalkeeper Tommy Lee, who starred for Dale at Wembley in the play-off final while on loan last season, will also be missing after suffering a broken jaw sustained in an off field incident.
