Boss Brian Talbot made a personal check on the high-flying Robins last week when his former club Rushden and Diamonds were beaten 1-0. His verdict: "They are the best footballing team in our division."
Third-placed Bristol, who fancy their chances of automatic promotion after suffering play-off heartache last season, are unbeaten in 13 games at their Ashton Gate stronghold.
Their strength is in a defence which has conceded just 27 goals in 36 games, the best record in Division Two.
It is a daunting task for a Latics side which has won only once away.
Talbot said: "Bristol are a quality side and well-organised. They have outstanding players in midfield and an excellent striker in Lee Peacock."
The new manager, who had been hoping to add a couple of new faces to the side, has been left with a lightweight squad.
But Talbot insisted: "The attitude of the lads has been first class.
"They can only do their best and there is no reason why we can't come away with a positive result."
LAST SEASON: Bristol C 2 Oldham 0
KEY OPPONENT: Lee Peacock - the powerful ex-Manchester City front man cost £600,000 and it looks like money well spent.
PREDICTION: Bristol C 3 Oldham 1 Tweet
