He added: "We need points and we need them quickly.
"When you look at the league table you realise you have to do something about it.
"This is the first of two home games in four days and the target will be maximum points.
"I have come here to play winning football and I want to see us scoring goals although, in our position at the moment, we might have to be a bit more dogged.
"I don't know a lot about the players but I am looking forward to finding out on the training pitch.
"John Sheridan will pick the team and I will manage it."
Sheridan could spring a surprise by calling up his younger brother Darren, who hasn't figured for more than three months following a fractured leg.
Midfielder Sheridan came though 90 minutes of a reserve team game in midweek.
Defender David Beharall picked up a broken rib in that game and will be out, along with Ernie Cooksey, who serves a one-match suspension.
The Latics, who are just three points off the drop zon, look set to start with New Zealand international Chris Killen and Calvin Zola up front which means 13-goal top scorer Scott Vernon will again be on the bench.
Teenage midfielder Steve Schumacher, on loan from Everton, will also have to settle for a sub's role.
There will be extra spice in the contest with the return of former favourite Wayne Andrews, who left Bundary Park last summer when his contract wasn't renewed.
LAST SEASON: Oldham 2 Colchester 0
KEY OPPONENT: Wayne Andrews - the 11-goal top scorer will be looking to put one over his old club.
