OLDHAM Athletic have turned to Arsene Wenger in their search for a new manager.
The Latics, who are hunting for an experienced replacement for Iain Dowie, have held talks with the Arsenal manager about the vacant position.
But while Oldham would obviously love to sign a manager of Wenger's calibre, the talks were merely to get the Frenchman's views on how Oldham should go about planning for the future.
"It was great of him to spare the time and his views on football were fascinating," co-owner Simon Corney told The Oldham Evening Chronicle.
Experience
"He said we should appoint someone who has been around for a long time as there is no substitute for experience in the lower divisions.
"His advice was to formulate a long-term plan and stick to it, which is what Arsenal have done - and, if we can emulate them on a smaller scale, I would be happy with that."
Wenger's advice could sound a death knell for John Sheridan's chances of getting the job, though the caretaker manager has at least been granted an interview for the role.
However Oldham, who have a six man shortlist, are thought to be interviewing a number of managers with Premiership experience and have intimated that they won't go a cheap option.
Should Oldham take Wenger's advice and go for an experienced manager? Have your say.

What a sensible and forward looking action for the Latics to take. I commend them for speaking to someone with such experience and execiting views on football and deciding to take the advice that has been given.
I look forward to seeing the results in the next few years.
Shez will make a good assistant to the new manager whoever that is, but we need the experience of a proven winner at the helm, which the new owners seem to be after to give us the best chance of succeeding next season. Wenger doesn't often get it wrong (unless he didnt see it!!)
I usually didn`t have much time for Arsene Wenger, but him taking time out just to talk about us and about our future has changed my mind. Thanks Arsene.
not wishing to be critical of mr wenger, but what does he know about the lower leagues. has he been up to boundary park ?
