He explained: "You learn much more about players after losing and we will see how they respond.
"There have been encouarging signs, heads have not gone down, and Wednesday will be our toughest test yet.
"It is a massive game against one of the biggest club's outside the Premiership.
"They will have a huge partisan crowd and the atmosphere is going to be electric."
The Latics could be given a double boost with defenders Michael Clegg and Dean Holden being lined up for their first games.
Clegg (back) and Holden (thigh) have stepped up their fitness levels and are expected to be given the all clear.
Big centre-back Kangana, on loan from Bolton, will also be back after missing the Carling Cup defeat at Scunthorpe in midweek.
