'Oldham on the brink'

OLDHAM Athletic's future hangs in the balance today, according to a report.

Owner Chris Moore is holding talks with a potential investor, and the outcome could be crucial to the survival of the club, says a report in the Oldham Chronicle.

And the club's financial plight has left manager Iain Dowie in limbo, unable even to offer new contracts to key players whose deals expire this summer.

Dowie told the Chronicle: 'I have spoken to Chris a couple of times and I am well aware of how perilous the financial situation is.

'Looks on brink of collapse'

'The whole future of the club is at stake and the situation is grim. I have heard the word liquidation mentioned and, though not a businessman, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to realise how serious the situation is.

'At the moment I cannot talk to any of the out-of-contract players because I have been given no budget.

'It looks on the brink of total collapse and unlikely I will get the chance to take the club forward. Unless there is massive investment it looks as though the team will be broken up.'

Moore is the club's major creditor, but it is thought that he is unwilling to continue funding a shortfall that ran to '50,000 per week at one time and he could take action to put the club into administration.

How worried are you about Oldham's future? Have your say.
