OLDHAM'S hopes of a top two finish took a battering as relegation threatened Port Vale snatched a vital survival point.

The Latics took the lead after 28 minutes when veteran winger David Eyres celebrated his return from a three match ban with a glancing header for his 12th goal of the season.

But they had suffered crushing blow three minutes earlier when in-form keeper Les Pogliacomi, who has kept a club record 18 clean sheets this season, was stretchered off after an unsavoury clash with former Oldham striker Adrian Littlejohn.

And the visitors grabbed an equaliser in 35th minute when Michael Cummins fired home from 10 yards.

Oldham had most of the second half chances but couldn't make them count.

Lee Duxbury saw a header bounce off the bar in the 66th minute and Dutch strike Clyde Winjhard had an effort booted off the line with seven minutes to go.
