Latics release middle man

OLDHAM Athletic have parted company with midfielder Mark Hughes.

The 23-year-old Northern Ireland international has not figured in the plans of new boss John Sheridan and his contract was paid up on Wednesday.

Dungannon-born Hughes started out as a trainee with Tottenham Hotspur and was brought to Boundaary Park on loan by former manager Brian Talbot.

He signed a two-year deal in the summer of last year and went on to make 39 appearances in his first season.

Hughes, who captained the Northern Ireland under-21s, will best be remembered for his wild celebrations when he scored his first, and only, goal for the Latics in a 4-3 win over Bristol City in October last year.

He had vowed to fight to win back his place in the starting line-up but is now a free agent.

Were Latics right to release Hughes? Have your say.

This is part of the intrigue of OAFC.....say nowt.

Quite clearly there was a clash of personality or could it have been Nationality ?????

The guy gets picked for his country and still cannot get into the OAFC team - John Sheridan is now the boss and the lad says he just wants to keep working and get into the first team.... no sooner had he said it than he has had his contract paid up.

NONE of our business ?.. quite right in reality, but incidents like this tend to leave a funny taste, but OAFC fans are used to having to deal with unusual club methods, whereas if the claim for "transparency" was even partially adhered to - the problems created by the loss of fans would quickly change and many of the self imposed financial restraints would be a thing of the past.

Just a view.

Have you ever just thought that Mark Hughes is not good enough and we have no need for him, why pay his wages if we dont need him

why pay his wages if we dont need him

exactly, but why pay out his contract and let him leave? unless i'm wrong this means we are paying the wages AND losing the player. the owners were only saying how counter-productive paying up contracts was a month back, yet here we go again...

Not at all, the lad had lots of potential, he will be snapped up quickly, meanwhile we have paid up his contract which has costs the club ¿¿¿¿¿¿'s where's the sense in that?

I have all the belief that Hughesy will come back to hunt you boys someday. I use to support Oldham because the man was playing for Oldham, not anymore. John Sheridan has made a mistake.... a costly one. Good luck Hughesy!

What Shez has done is a joke. How in the summer did it make an sense bringing in 4 midfielders and getting rid of Hughesy when all that money should have been spent on strikers. We had the makings of a good side when he took over and badly needed to keep Beckett. Instead he's brought in second rate players that have made the team worse. We only thought things were bad under Moore
