Chesterfield 1 Oldham Athletic 0

Coca Cola League 1

OLDHAM came up with one of their worst performances of the season on a day when all the other results went against them, leaving them teetering on the brink of relegation with just one game to go.

Nearest rivals MK Dons are fourth from bottom, just one point behind the Latics, so all now rests on next Saturday's game.

Oldham are at home to Bradford City, while MK Dons host Tranmere Rovers - it will be winner takes all.

Boss Ronnie Moore had made five changes in a desperate bid to get the three points which would have guaranteed League One status, but he still could not come up with a winning formula.

Their second defeat on the trot left Moore fuming: 'We weren't good enough, simple as that.

'I just can't see where our next win is coming from but we've got just the one game left to get it.

'We got undone by a set-piece and that shouldn't happen.

'It isn't that long ago that we were eight points clear and the gap is down to one.

'There were one or two players out there who were a bit thick and some others brain dead.

'They are professional footballers and should know what to do, but it looks like I need an earpiece so I can keep telling them.

'We should be streets ahead by now instead of worrying about next week. It's a massive game and Bradford won't be doing us any favours.

'We haven't been able to get over the finishing line but we have to do it next Saturday to make sure we stay in this division. There is no way we can rely on what MK Dons do.

'Our destiny is in our own hands and we have to take it. If not, we could be down.'

Chesterfield had not won for seven games, but it was former Oldham favourite Ian Ewatt who changed all that when he provided the second-half clincher.

Latics had missed a great chance to get off to a flying start after just seven minutes.

Jamaican international Jermaine Johnson, given his first start since Moore took over, crossed into the box but the normally reliable Luke Beckett volleyed over from close range.

It was to set the pattern for the game as Latics rarely troubled the home side's keeper.

They were forced to reshuffle after just 15 minutes when defender Stefan Stam was stretchered off following a clash of heads.

Despite being on top for most of the first half, Oldham fell away after the break and were punished when Chesterfield went in front in the 67th minute.

A set-piece move was perfectly executed as Allott whipped the ball into the box and Guy Branston lost Ian Evatt who brought a fine save from Les Pogliacomi.

He could not hold onto the ball though and, when the ball broke back to the Chesterfield skipper, he was not going to mess up a simple second chance.

Latics could not find a way back and everything now hinges on a nervous last day at Boundary Park.
