Shefki Kuqi’s brace and Tom Adeyemi’s header had put the Latics 3-0 ahead after 38 minutes at Brunton Park.
However, Lee Miller pulled one back for the hosts with half-time approaching, after which Francois Zoko netted on 48 minutes.
Having ridden out almost incessant Carlisle pressure, the Oldham defence finally cracked again in stoppage time as Zoko backheeled his second.
Simpson admitted: “The goal sent them in at half-time with a little bit of hope and, to be fair to them, they were brilliant second half.
“I think we’d have settled for being 3-0 up away from home.
“We created numerous chances, even in the second half, and everyone’s gutted we haven’t won the game.” Tweet
