For the second straight season, Oldham Athletic tossed away what looked a match-winning advantage at Brunton Park.
Having led 3-0 after 38 minutes, they were undone by a storming comeback from the hosts.
Carlisle pulled one back in first-half added time, netted another three minutes into the second half and equalised again in injury time.
Playing into a strong breeze, Athletic opened the scoring from the spot on 22 minutes.
Lee Miller was adjudged to have felled Robbie Simpson as he got ready to shoot, Shefki Kuqi netting from the spot.
Ten minutes later, Tom Adeyemi doubled the lead when his header looped over Adam Collin.
Brunton Park was further stunned when Chris Taylor and David Mellor combined, the latter’s cross hammered home by Kuqi.
However, Carlisle gave themselves hope in first-half added time when Lee Miller headed in from James Berrett’s near post corner.
The Cumbrians then had the perfect start to the second period when half-time substitute Francois Zoko clinically beat Alex Cisak.
That was the cue for relentless pressure from the hosts with Zoko’s cross narrowly ahead of Rory Loy, who also went close.
Having looked like they had ridden out the storm, Athletic suffered one last twist of fate in the fourth of five added minutes.
Cisak beat away a shot, only for the ball to be driven across goal where Zoko tapped home.
