The Latics have plunged from the League One comfort zone to just outside the bottom four after picking up a paltry eight points from a possible 33.
And Talbot admitted: "There are no easy fixtures from here on in, but we must somehow get the 14 points that should see us safe.
"We achieved a miracle last season to stay up and it might have been better if we had gone down. I could have had a year to rebuild.
"I inherited a lot of problems both on and off the pitch, and we are sorting them out. Bristol City is another tough fixture, but there is no need to panic."
Oldham will have defender Danny Hall back after suspension, and new signings Stefan Stam and Guy Branston will be fighting for back-four places.
Ten-goal striker Scott Vernon is out with cartilage damage to his nose, so on-loan Manchester United youngster Kenny Cooper or Chris Hall will partner fit-again New Zealand international Chris Killen up front. Tweet

What sort of comments are those???
'We performed a miracle to survive last year'?? We never actually dropped into the relegation zone despite our financial problems, and never seriously looked poor enough to go down.
Maybe it would have been better if we had gone down?? What is this clown talking about?
Time to go...
Could be it's all Poggi's fault now... everyone else has had the blame EXCEPT ..."THE MANAGER"....
Looking at the state of affairs I suspect we may need both keepers and three extra men..
Dear OAFC Directors - Can you not see - you have appointed the wrong man and quite clearly the whole team is now totally disheartened and in fact this looks like 'player power' to me... new manager or he will have to get a whole new team and a few extras for next year as no one will play for him now.
Each player - except the favourites !!! have all been held to be responsible for all sorts over the entire season, now it's the keeper at fault... oh dear PANIC- PANIC - PANIC...wHY NOT TRY PICKING YOUR BEST TEAM RATHER THAN YOUR FAVOURITES ALL THE TIME.
Still save a few quid not having to bother about the clapped out vans final eh...!
Keep the faith !!!! .. what faith ?
R U B B I S H T A L B O T
Now there we are Mr Talbot has proved without any shadow of a doubt that he has no idea what the problems are.
Can't really say this result was due to Les Pogliacomi now can he ?... no doubt we will soon have a rush of transfers requests, including Poggi....and Mr Talbot should be taking a serious look at himself and his Management methods then doing the decent thing and going home, preferably tomorrow or sooner !...
