Oldham Athletic look to end dismal cup run

Oldham Athletic will look to put three years of misery behind them when they entertain Carlisle United in the Carling Cup first round this evening, writes Gavin Browne.

For a side which made its name on the back of cup success two decades ago, Latics’ recent results make for pretty grim reading.

Their last victory in a cup game of any description came in the same competition with a penalty shoot-out win at Rochdale in August 2008.

Latics boss Paul Dickov said: “We want to win for lots of reasons.

“People keep telling me we haven’t won a cup tie for a long time, so we want to win to end that statistic, as well as for the financial boost that a cup run brings. I’ll be playing my strongest team.”

With Matthew Lund away on international duty with Northern Ireland’s Under-21s, it means a likely debut for new signing James Wesolowski.

The 23-year-old, a former team-mate of Dickov’s at Leicester City, penned a one-year deal on Monday after leaving Peterborough United.

Josh Parker is in line for his first senior start.
