The Latics started brightly with Kevin Betsy blasting over from 20 yards in the first minute and Jermaine Johnson forcing a save seconds later.
Stand in keeper Craig Mawson came to Oldham's rescue in the eighth minute with a superb save to keep out Paul Green.
It was Maswon in action again 20 minutes later, this time reacting quickly to deny Jermaine McSporron.
But the Latics got on top in the 39th minute when Johnson fired them in front with a perfectly flighted effort from the edge of the box.
It was the Jamaican international fourth goal in five games.
But the home side were back level on the stroke of half time when John Eyre was adjudged to have handled in the box and this time Mawson had no chance to keep out Michael McIndoe's well struck penalty. Tweet
