Oldham Athletic 2 Wrexham 3

IF out-of-sorts Oldham can start games like they finished this one then things can only get better.

But they must get their act together quickly or all the pre-season optimism will be lost.

Even grim-faced boss Brian Talbot conceded after a wretched opening of two defeats in four days: "We are in a battle already."

A hat-trick from Trinidad and Tobago striker Hector Sam inside 63 minutes left Oldham still searching for their first point of the campaign.

Talbot said: "We just couldn't handle him and when his third goal went in we were left with a mountain to climb. It was game, set and match. If we are going to lose, at least let's give it a go."

Fightback

There were some harsh words at half-time and Oldham came out to show some fighting spirit with goals from substitute Danny Boshell and new boy Rodney Jack in the 71st and 80th minutes.

But Talbot added: "A second defeat has to be a wake-up call and it looks like it is going to be a hard season. We didn't turn up in the first half and some of my players didn't look as if they were interested.

"It has been a poor start and I can only apologise to the fans. But to pull three goals back was just too big an ask."

Oldham are still awaiting international clearance for Dutchman Clyde Wijnhard.

The 30-year-old former Ajax and Leeds United striker last played for Portuguese side Beira Mar, managed by former Latics boss Mick Wadsworth.
