By March the Latics were staring relegation flush in the face and it was at that lowest point in the campaign that the club's board of directors pulled off a master-stroke by persuading Brian Talbot to leave Rushden and Diamonds for a new life in the old Lancashire mill town.
The wisdom of that decision is graphically illustrated by Oldham's record since Talbot took charge for the match against Colchester at Boundary Park on the second Saturday in March.
Twelve games played and only one defeat to banish the threat of relegation. Amongst those scalps were victories over Second Division champions Plymouth and play-off teams Bristol City and Swindon Town. And that one defeat?
Rock-bottom Wycombe. Wouldn't you just know it.
TALBOT'S RATING: 7
Have your say.

'Talbo' has done the job, but i wouldnt class him a long term manager that we were advised to take on for longterm objectives! I just hope that perhaps Sheridan is being trained, or the mighty board have something up their sleeves!
Jury's still out on Talbot, but he did the job he was asked to do with a squad he barely knew.
What I take exception to is the comment that Oldham's plunge after Dowie left was predictable. Err, the plunge was well and truly under way before he left, and in fact he left when we couldn't win for love nor money. You could argue we only really started to recover once he'd gone.
