The Latics fielded a strong side with just two changes from the team who drew with Brentford on Saturday and boss Dave Penney handed a debut to left-back Alan Sheehan, who had signed on loan from Leeds on Tuesday.
And he played a part in helping the League One team dominate the first half with Danny Whitaker running the show.
He fired Oldham ahead on 10 minutes when he got on the end of Pawel Abbott’s right-wing cross and rifled the ball into the top corner of the net giving Stanley keeper Ian Dunbavin no chance.
Oldham bossed the half with Whitaker wasting a good chance when clean through, on-loan Blackburn striker Nick Blackman firing just wide from 20 yards and Whitaker having a fierce shot cleared off the line by Phil Edwards just before half-time.
However, it all went wrong for Oldham after the break.
Warning
There was a warning of what was to come when Latics keeper Dean Brill, a spectator in the first half, turned a Jimmy Ryan 25-yard effort over his goal immediately after the restart.
Then came two goals in seven minutes which won the match for the lower division side.
A Michael Symes cross into the danger area was turned into his own goal by Oldham captain Sean Gregan on the hour.
And then the home defence were caught out again when a John Miles corner was drilled home by defender Edwards to the shock of the Latics fans.
Ryan Brooke was unlucky not to draw Oldham level with a low shot which was touched away by Dunbavin but Penney’s side were again left counting the cost of missed chances.
