The former Manchester City owner held preliminary talks over investing some of his cash into the Boundary Park outfit.
However, he has decided to keep his powder dry at the moment after discusions with Latics' chief executive Alan Hardy and managing director Simon Corney.
But the door is still open should Wardle change his mind.
"John does not want to get involved with any club at present," Hardy said.
"It is fair to say he has considered it but with his other interests, and after discussions with his family, he feels it is not what he wants at this stage.
"John is a good friend of the club and has been to watch us a few times this season. He also called in for a chat over a cup of coffee with me, Simon and Joe Royle recently.
"He remains a good friend to us and is willing to offer advice if ever it is needed."

I can assure you the money will be better spent than it would at Oldham.
Joe Royles tenure so far has been awful, why did we not go and get Ronnie Moore back!.
