OLDHAM extended their unbeaten run to five games by coming from two goals down to draw at London Road.

An entertaining match between two of League One’s top six was almost overshadowed by a bizarre performance by referee Iain Williamson, who showed six yellow cards and annoyed both teams with some contentious decisions.

Having made four changes from the draw with Brighton, Oldham boss John Sheridan saw his side go behind when Aaron McLean’s cross deflected off Stefan Stam and looped over Greg Fleming.

It threatened to get worse for the Latics when Mr Williamson, who booked five players in the first 27 minutes, awarded the hosts two debatable penalties.

The first came when Fleming was adjudged to have fouled McLean only for the keeper to deny the same player from the spot.

Shortly afterwards Mr Williamson spotted an apparent push on Craig Mackail-Smith who hit the post with his penalty but saw McLean convert the rebound.

The Latics gained a lifeline just before half time when Mark Allott’s shot fell to Lee Hughes who turned and fired past Joe Lewis.

Chris Taylor was denied an equaliser by a fine save from Lewis before Hughes levelled proceedings 10 minutes into the second half.

Lewis spilled Andy Liddell’s shot and Hughes prodded home his 11th goal of the season from close range.

Both sides tried for a winner with Mackail-Smith firing wide and Taylor’s 20-yard shot deflected behind but a point apiece was a fair outcome.
