FC United sneak win

SIMON Carden struck twice late on to pinch an unlikely 3-2 victory for FC United after they'd lost goalkeeper Sam Ashton to injury.

Ashton was forced off in the 63rd minute with a knock he sustained in a failed attempt to prevent Nick Wellecombe giving hosts Newcastle Town a shock 2-1 lead at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

With no substitute keeper on the bench, striker Rory Patterson took over in goal, but, despite the handicap, the rebel reds bounced back to snatch a win which takes them nine points clear of second-placed Salford City.

Boss Karl Marginson said: "The boys showed great character to come back under difficult circumstances. I couldn't have asked for more."

Steve Spencer slotted FC United into a 36th-minute lead, but it was quickly wiped out by Dave Berks.

Marginson's men appeared to be heading for only their second defeat of the season when Ashton was carried off after Wellecombe had struck.

But Carden tapped in a 76th-minute equaliser before volleying home the winner more than four minutes into stoppage-time.

I have noticed of late that a number of rival league clubs seem to be sending down groups of" young gentlemen" to test out the "commitment" of the fc fans. Its not something i welcome as i try to take my 8 year old daughter and 13 year old son to the matches home and away and don't want to revisit the seventies again....it was awful then and i don't want my children to see ti through there own eyes thankyou. As always the fans of fc can be relied upon irrespective of the challenge opposed...but it is something i would like the club to try and address through the local police networks please!!

I have to agree with red john on this matter. The events on Saturday (off the pitch) were a disgrace and this type of incident will only end up tarnishing our reputation. I know it's not our lads causing the aggro and fair play that we stand up for ourselves but with us always being the larger numbers, it's undoubted we're going to suffer backlash from this.

I can only support the previous comments. We, like hundreds of others saw the small group of idiots trying to goad FC fans into trouble. I believe they were stoke fans? Anyway, fair play to our supporters who, in the majority ignored it and watched an exciting game. The relief at the end was obvious to the players at the last minute win. This just gets better.

Don't dignify the idiots with any coverage. It's simply more fuel for the fire. We knew that this would happen as we moved up the league pyramid, it's bound to happen again. Lets just ignore them as much as possible and carry on having fun.

I have read a number of the comments on this site and one of the recurring themes is how big the FC attendances are. This has included cheap asides at local League clubs like Bury, Rochdale and Macclesfield. Given that FC brands itself the soul of United or Newton Heath if you want to swallow the Manchester connection its not really a very good turn out is it. It seems to me that the soul of United is represented by more than 72,000 a week at Old Trafford. Burys faithful comprise just under 3,000 a week supporting the football heritage of the club without the need for glory seeking. Its this arrogance which in my opinion is creating this climate of resentment and confrontation.

Arthur you are under a great misconception about the attendances. The 72k or so you say go to OT each game are being treated as customers. Out of the 72k or so I would say that a fair few of those are day trippers with real Manchester United supporters making up the difference. Have you been recently? There¿¿TMs more atmosphere on the moon. There are those of course who will go whatever and be duped by the Gnome and his crew. Good luck to them. Some fans of FC United follow both teams and some don¿¿TMt (and won¿¿TMt) go to OT whilst Glazer is there. A lot of FC fans have firmly nailed their colours to the mast and follow FC only. I suppose that you follow Stone Dominoes? I might be wrong. Stone will be well pleased with the extra money when FC play them make no mistake about that and you will be first in the queue to get in the gate. Glory hunting? You¿¿TMre having a laugh aren¿¿TMt you? If we wanted glory then we¿¿TMd be travelling up and down the country to PL grounds watching overpaid prima donnas biting each other. Instead we are making our way around level 9 of the pyramid ¿¿" and that¿¿TMs our choice by the way. I suppose you don¿¿TMt have any comment on the amount of income that is generated by level 9 clubs because of the existence of FC? The club has been a god send to all clubs at that level and we as supporters do not begrudge paying that to follow FC home and away. By the way the deal with Bury is a commercial arrangement and the money we pay for Gigg Lane is a great bonus to our hosts ¿¿" which we don¿¿TMt begrudge paying either. If we choose to follow FC and that means attracting bigger crowds than local league teams then that¿¿TMs nothing to do with the fans of FC it¿¿TMs probably due to the apathy of people like you who despite going on about how low some crowds are will be first in the queue when the draw for the third round of the FA Cup comes around. Arthur, please bare in mind that any comment on FC's crowd must be put in context of the league we play in. Last year we averaged 3052 watching football 6 steps below league football in a division that usually averages just 72, no matter what way you look at it, that is phenominal. Taking Macclesfield as an example (not as a cheap shot) they get an average of around 1800 and that includes away fans, something FC very rarely see. No one is claiming we get anything like Premiership crowds but in perspective 3000 plus coming to watch us would put us at the top of the Conference attendances and comparable with 5 or 6 league sides. That is something that we are quite rightly proud of.

Arthur you say that 3,000 attendance at FC games is a bit small compared to the 72,000 at OT. I suppose you think that when man utd first set out all those years ago as Newton Heath there was 72,000 there. it has taken Man Utd a very long time to get those attendences, for a club in only it's second season to be getting the numbers FC get is is very impressive.

I didn't take offence to your scribblings Free Red and am responding with the same intention.Having read your contribution to what passes for thought I am puzzled as to why you need to hide behind at least three maybe more pseudonyms? I know you like to provide directions to grounds and the occassional unofficial match report (who else does that I wonder) but I haven't seen anything else of consequence. So just to try again. If FC represents the soul of United then its a fairly meagre soul isn't it and a soul that is so fickle it must be rotten to the core. It can't possibly be a healthy soul can it? You know lemmings don't know why they through themselves off the side of a Cliff either but they do so willingly. Do you think somehow you might be related?

Salford Red lifelong. Well done for supporting your team and long may it last. The game at the Willows was a corker and the FA vase game should be equally as exciting with FC winning 2-1!!!!! I am looking forward to it. I hope that Salford go up this season as it adds to the spice of a local derby. Real FC fans and real Salford fans can look forward to some good local rivalry and long may it last without those idiots who turned up a few weeks ago bringing shame on your club. They are idiots who are not wanted at any level of football. Good on you. As for that idiot Dawkins then take no notice of him. I think Free Red has got him sussed for what he really is. Yes we are a big Club but we are not a MASSIVE club. Forza FCUM.
