Sub Berkeley salvages point for tame Tigers

Hyde failed to take full advantage of Blue Square Bet North title rival neighbours Stalybridge Celtic being on FA Trophy duty as they were held 2-2 by visiting Corby, writes Tony Glennon.

But Gary Lowe’s table-topping Tigers were heading for their second successive defeat until sub Matthew Berkeley struck to salvage a point to take them 12 clear of second-placed Bridge, who now have three games in hand.

Andy Pearson gave Hyde a 16th-minute lead when he helped in Ryan Crowther’s free-kick. But Lowe’s leaders lost their way after Crowther then hit the bar and found themselves 2-1 down with time running out.

Berkeley came to the rescue with a 76th-minute equaliser, steering in David Poole’s low cross, before coming close to snatching a late winner when he hit the post.

Meanwhile, Altrincham stepped up their play-off push with goals by James Lawrie and Damian Reeves earning them a 2-1 victory at Workington – their second away triumph in six days.

Lawrie’s 25th-minute strike secured the back-to-form Robins a deserved interval advantage.

Reeves gave Alty a two-goal cushion by rifling in a 62nd-minute penalty for his 27th goal of the season following a trip on Liam Tomsett.

Ex-Droylsden striker David McNiven pulled one back but Alty held on and move up to seventh.

FC United missed another chance to climb into Evo-Stik Premier’s top five as they fought out a goalless draw at North Ferriby. The Rebels had a major let-off when the hosts’ Paul Harsley missed a 63rd-minute penalty and were then reduced`to 10 men with Lee Neville given a straight red`card after appearing to elbow Ferriby’s Wayne Brooksby in the face.

Ashton United’s home clash with Stocksbridge was one of many matches frozen off.

But Evo-Stik North promotion hopefuls Woodley beat Wakefield 2-1 on their 3G pitch at Lambeth Stadium, while Steve Halford’s first league game in charge of Mossley ended in an identical defeat at Witton Albion.

Ramsbottom won 3-1 at Runcorn Town to stay tucked in behind North West Counties League leaders Bootle.
