FC United fall at final hurdle

NOT THIS TIME: FC United after the final whistle
FC United’s incredible season came to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Colwyn Bay in the Evo-Stik Premier League play-off final.

Former Bury striker Jon Newby scored the only goal of the game to condemn United to a third season in the third-tier of non-league football and send the 1,500 travelling fans home disappointed.

“That their goalkeeper has been named man-of-the-match really says it all for me,” said the Rebels manager Karl Marginson.

“I don’t want to say we were the better side because we’ve ended up losing but we dominated possession and caused them problems.

“They were good defensively and the keeper has done what he’s supposed to do.

“If we’d have scored when we were well on top then we would have gone on to greater things.

Marginson added: “I’m a little bit disappointed with the way we defended for the goal but I can’t really fault the players. Not just for today but for everything they’ve done this season.

“It’s an absolutely monumental achievement to get to this stage.

“We’ve had the FA Cup run and the fans have had a ball in the sun even though we’ve lost. We can take a lot from this season and we’ve got to be proud.”

Marginson added: “We’ll have another go at getting up next year but do it as champions.

“I can’t wait for next season already, I can’t wait.”

Will FC United go up next season? Have your say.

Didn't derserve to win,
Didn't deserve to lose.

Just not our day - onward and upward.

Despite being without our most creative player (Jerome Wright) and top scorer (Mike Norton), the lads gave a good account of themselves in a swirling wind.

The two centre backs for Colwyn Bay coped pretty well and were the basis for their win in my opinion.

Although it was disappointing to lose a game of such impotance, in hindsight it may be a blessing in disguise. I feel a step up to conference north level would have been a season to early for the club financially. Hopefully we'll be talking about FC planning the first game of the new season in the conference north in our new stadium at Moston.

Onwards and upwards.............

Forza FCUM

Keep the Red flag flying high at Mossley tonight, Tuesday 3rd May

To conclude a magnificent season for FC United as a whole, the youth team kick off their final game of the season at Seel Park Mossley at 7.00pm. The team will be presented with the Championship Trophy and their winner’s medals.

Get yourself to that football ground.

Slightly disappointing end to an amazing season. I'd settle for the same again next year.

To be honest, our priorities lie off the field and the on-field success will continue when we are good and ready. We'll certainly be in the top 2 or 3 next season and, with a settled side, we've got a great chance of winning it.

Looking forward to more entertaining affordable football at the same level next year.

Bring on July and the pre-season matches.

It's been a great season for FC even if we didn't quite make promotion. Roll on August!
