FC United keep play-off hopes alive

Ten-man FC United produced a stirring comeback to sink FA Trophy quarter-finalists Chasetown 4-2 and maintain their push for the Evo-Stik Premier play-offs.

The Rebels were really up against it when defender Richard Battersby received his marching orders for the foul which led to Dean Perrow firing the visitors in front with a 44th-minute penalty.

But Karl Marginson’s men still found time to equalise before the break when Jake Cottrell arrived at the near post to rifle home Matthew Wolfenden’s cross.

FC continued to make light of their disadvantage after the break with Mike Norton beating keeper Ryan Price from a tight angle to give them a 66th-minute lead and then making it 3-1 soon after following fine work by Lee Neville.

Chasetown’s Ben Jevons pulled a goal back six minutes from time but the last word went to United as Matthew Tierney set up Wolfenden for a well-taken fourth.

The win takes FC into the top-half of the table and, with 10 points from their last four games, they’re now well and truly back in the promotion hunt ahead of this weekend’s visit of Burscough.

It was a great performance from the lads to score 3 in the second half with 10 men. Chasetown struggled with our attacking play which is encouraging for the remainder of the season.

Next 4 games are all winnable but some other tough ones to come after that.

What a game and a fantastic nights entertainment!

Much better than watching Arsenal v Barca on the TV.

One of the goals was scored when we only had 9 men as I think Jake Cottrell was lying poleaxed in Midfield.

Couldn't believe how much running at high speed Mike Norton did. He was absolutely pegging it across the pitch harrying the Chasetown defenders and we could tell they absolutely hated it. The penalty given against Richard Battersby really spurred them on. Wolfie Wolfenden on the right flank was brilliant too. But superb from all the team.

A Goal-den Opporunity
Wednesday’s win at home to Chasetown not only heralded United’s second win in five days (scoring four goals in both of the fixtures) but also saw the Reds move back into the top half of the league and just four points off North Ferriby United who currently occupy the final play off position place.

What is the importance of the match between United and North Ferriby on March 8th now? A potential six pointer between the two could be made more vital depending on United’s results in the four games between then and now.

Beginning with Burscough on Saturday, before meeting Stockbridge Park Steels, Nantwich and Mickelover Sports United face playing teams who sit 14th, 15th, 13th and 18th in the league respectively and while no game is ever a given United must fancy their chances against sides in the lower half of the league especially if their own form continues in the way it has over the past few weeks.

So when United meet North Ferriby will they have closed the gap or even moved above them in the league? It’s hard to say, but one thing for sure is that the players and fans alike will put everything into this golden opportunity. Bring On United!
