FA Cup heroes Northwich Victoria are again facing expulsion from Blue Square North - just as they appeared to be emerging as unlikely promotion contenders.

Andy Preece's side, who famously knocked Charlton Athletic out of the Cup only two months ago, stepped up their bid for a swift return to Blue Square Premier with Brian Dutton's 81st- minute strike securing them a 3-2 win at Farsley.

But Vics' third triumph in eight days - one which lifts them to 11th despite having started the season on minus 10 points for entering administration - came as they were hit by the news they once more face being demoted to the UniBond League.

Chairman Jim Rushe said: "We've been told we're in breach of the rule which states that, if a club doesn't pay its creditors everything it owes them, it will get thrown out.

"We feel we're being victimised for having won our fight to stay in the league last year."

Conference chairman Brian Lee hit back, saying: "Northwich knew the rules before the season started."

Joe O'Neill's missed spot-kick cost Stalybridge Celtic caretaker-boss Benny Phillips victory in his first game in charge following Steve Burr's shock switch to Kidderminster.

The Celts' home Blue Square North promotion battle with Hinckley ended goalless after nine-goal top-scorer O'Neill saw his 31st-minute penalty saved by visiting keeper Chris MacKenzie.

Droylsden boost

Bridge were also unable to cash in on Hinckley being forced to play for an hour with only 10 men due to defender Paul Lister having seen red for upending O'Neill in the box.

But, despite the set-back, chairman Rob Gorski insists Burr's former No2 Phillips is in pole position to become his permanent replacement even though a flood of applications is expected, with ex-Northwich chief Jimmy Quinn among those known to be chasing the job.

Gorksi said: "Steve Burr has unfortunately gone but nothing else need change."

Droylsden boosted their promotion prospects with Neil Prince and Paul Brown each scoring twice in a 4-1 rout of visiting Gainsborough.

Altrincham fought back from two goals down to boost their Blue Square Premier play-off hopes with a 3-2 home win over Hayes and Yeading.

"We scraped a win after a dismal performance," said skipper Robbie Lawton.

Trailing 2-0 inside inside half-an-hour, Alty replied through Chris Senior (31 mins) and Colin Little (40) before Senior struck again 10 minutes from time to keep them within striking distance of the play-off places.

Ashton United ended a run of six successive UniBond Premier defeats with a 3-0 romp at Ossett Town, while ex-FC United striker Tommy Turner scored twice as New Mills marched through to the last-16 of the FA Vase with a 2-1 comeback victory over Witney United.
